    Help!!!!

I've setup a wireless network using a 4-port wireless adsl router with two PCs connected by cable and two wireless. All works well until the Vaio is connected wireless and cable. All other pc's cannot access the net or email (online using Outlook). I can ping ip addresses online and locally but not www addresses suggesting some sort of name server fault.

Can any one suggest what the Vaio is doing that would cause the router to behave like this?

To clarify - do you mean that the problem system is using both a wired and a wireless connection to your network?

Sure sounds like a DOS (Denile of Service) attack is running on the Vaio.

    On each machine
    start /run / command
    type
    ipconfig /all
    check the machines IP addresses.
See if by any chance two of them have the same IP.
It almost sounds like what happens when you have all machines but one set to obtain an IP automatically from the router, and set that other one to a specific IP and it happens to be one already assigned.

Or are you saying you are trying to connect to the network with the sony using both wired and wireless at the same time?
    Try with wireless only.

The problem occurs both when trying to connect either wireless or wired, not both together.

If the Vaio is set with an IP address and the others obtain from router does it really cause this problem. I've not encountered this specific fault before. What I usually get is a message saying IP address already in use or something similar, not total DOS. I will try this when the laptop owner returns from holiday next week and let you know.

    Thanks for the assistance.

I can not provide an answer but I do have a question.

WHY both wired and Wireles ??. I believe Wired is far more overall dependable.

    That would be my GUESS.

A cant imagine a duplicated IP address creating the train wreck described here but I guess it's possible. Now if the static IP in the laptop is the same as the gateway that could create a problem.
Simple solution clear the check boxes in TCP/IP properties so adress will be automatically obtained.

It was never intended to have both wireless and wired. The guy wants wirelss to avoid cabling issues so I tried wireless and encountered the problem. I thought I might as well try wired to see if it was any different.

    Finally

Ok checked laptop for assigned addresses but was set to automatic.

Tried to connect laptop to another router but brought that one down too. Considering there were other issues with the laptop I decided to wipe and return to factory settings. Once this was done the wireless and wired conencted fine. So never did get to the root of the problem but thanks to ahlp for help and suggestions.
