    hi
not sure if this is the right thread to post this problem.... Moved to Other Software
anyway, I've been using MS Excel 97 (on W98SE) for a while. recently, when I open an excel file directly from my Desktop (by double-clicking on the file), Excel fires up but reported an file error, unable to locate file.

After some debugging and testings, I realised that this error on occurs on file with spaces in the filename, eg "my data.xls ". After renamed to "my_data.xls ", the file opens fine.

Anyone has any experience on this problem? Appreciate any help/advice.

    Thanks.

Does this behaviour only occur on files located on the Desktop or with all files in Windows Explorer?

Longshot - are you using the Active Desktop?

Is there anything in Tools > Options re. 8.3 file names? I seem to recall that 98 was the first OS to allow extended file names up to 250 characters with spaces.

It's been a long time since I last used 98 or Office 97 so I am groping in the shadows here :)

Have you tried a repair of Office - Help > Detect and Repair or through Add/Remove Programs > Office > Change/Remove > Repair?

    hi PeteC

    thanks for your reply.

the problem also affects files in other folders. However, if it is a MS Word file, there is no such problem. Strange!!

will try repairing with the MSOffice installation CDs.

    thanks.
