    Hi All
My sister has a machine that is running window 98. and MS Antispyware won't load on it.
Is there something else that I could put on her machine that is free and basically automatic?
She is not good at updating....(hense the last paper weight that was sitting on her computer desk).
She now has an old emachine that runs slower then grass grows.

    Thanks
    Geri

Geri--Some people feel that AdAware is slightly easier to use than SpybotS&D. Free version here
    http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE...045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
But both of these programs have to be updated to be effective (including maybe after initial installation), since the baddies are always changing.
Check for updates every ten days or so.
However, it really is a simple matter. On the opening screen once AdAware is installed is a link to "Check for updates now ". You click Connect in the next window, if updates are available, click OK and things proceed pretty automatically after that. When the updates are downloaded, click Finish and exit the AdAware program unless she wants to run a scan. In that case, click Start.

Note that you do have to run scans with these programs.

    Hi Gerri,

Easier to use beause the free version is a scanner only. SSD can be run as both. Good idea to have Ad-Aware anyway.

Ad-Aware does have a paid version with realtime protection called Ad Watch.

    Hi Guys
I talked her into getting a new computer, Office Depot had one for $276 after mail in rebates.
It's an emachine very basic, 40gig hard drive, 2.8MHz but it is like lightening speed compared to the one she had and she doesn't really do much, a little surfing, mostly email.
Had her buy etrust anti virus and firewall, and I put MS antispyware on it.
That's the problem, She doesn't update:( That's why I needed something automatic.
I know she is still at risk, but that is the best I can do, because she just thinks that once something is on there it's good to go .
    Thanks for the input.

Geri--Actually MS Antispyware does update automatically if you set it up that way under AutoUpdater at bottom left of opening window.
I never ran EZ Trust. It may have an autoupdate feature too. But unless she has cable or DSL her internet connection must be on when the auto update is scheduled.

EZ Trust Antivirus also updates automatically by default when an internet connection is made - check out the update log.
