My daugther's HP Pavillon 512n mouse recently starting having problems. I gave her one of my working IBM standard mice (Serial connected). When she rebooted the machine with the IBM mouse, all that she saw was the Blue HP Page, and then nothing. I had her shutdown and put the HP mice back in and reboot. System (Windows XP Home SP1) came up fine. Did it again, shutdown, plug in the IBM mice and reboot.. Still just comes up to the HP Screen, nothing else. Shutdown , put the HP mouse back in and the system came up fine.
Is there any restriction that HP has with the type of mice that can be used. I've used standard IBM mice on many different machines (Compaqs, Dells, Thinkpads, Laptops, etc) and never had any problem.
Does HP (512n) have a special driver for their own mice?

Did you check in the Bios for any settings that need to be enabled/disabled?
