i have a windows 2000 server set up with approx 50 websites configured in DNS and IIS. i am currently setting up a brand new server. i see in the folder c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DNS\ are all the DNS files i created (there is a file for each website). i copied these files to the new server and the new server does not recognize them when in DNS view.

i was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to copy these files, or what i am missing.... so i do not have to manually type in all these settings again.

that's what computers are for! do the work once, then let them work for you.... when they work :)

Are you talking about DNS records? I'm not familiar with DNS files.

Also, if you could describe your setup a little it would help. Is this a DNS server? If so, on a local domain you run or on the internet?

If it's a DNS server, are you seeing event log errors 453 & 7053? If so, take a look at Kb249868

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

hello and thanks for the welcome and the reply.
there are no DNS errors in the event log.
my server serves the internet. forgive my terminology please. computers are a hobby for me so i will describe as best i can.

to set up my first server, under DNS, i created forward lookup zones. when searching i found the files that were created... they are in c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DNS (one for each website). i thought i could simply transfer these DNS files or records (whatever they are) to my new server without going thru the tedious task of re-typing all the DNS information.

i copied these files or records to my new server and placed them in the same directory. they do not appear as forward lookup zones on the new server when i look at DNS. there must be something else in addition to these files during configuration that happens when one creates a forward lookup zone. if someone knows where or what that file is, please tell me. i hate typing stuff.

    :)
