I have XP installed on C drive and would like to install a copy of Linux Mandrake 7.1 to my D drive. When I try to install it I get a message that Linux can not be installed with this version of windows. Try another method. Since XP has no DOS, how can I install Linux?

    C:\=NTFS
    D:\=Fat32

I have XP Pro on my C drive and Linux Mandrake 8.2 (was 7.1) on another partition.

You cannot install Linux on a FAT32 drive. You need to have unpartitioned space. Delete or resize (using Partition Magic) your D drive to clear at least 2gig of space on the hard drive. Boot to the Linux CD and install as normal. You'll be asked where to install the boot loader, accept the default of installing it in the MBR. During the installation you'll be asked to configure the boot loader. Tell it to add Windows to the boot menu. It will ask where windows is installed. Tell it the first partition on the first disk.

    Login Failed

I decided to put it on my laptop as a stand alone OS. I installed it easily, but when I get to the login screen, I get "Login Failed" no matter what I type in. I have not been able to open the program yet.

During setup, you would have been asked to enter a 'root' password. You should be able to log on with the username root, and the password you entered during setup.

Usernames are case sensitive in Linux (unlike Windows) so make sure root is all lowercase. Obviously, passwords are case sensitive in either OS.

If that doesn't work, I would reinstall it. Make sure you remember the root password.

When I tried that I was greeted with a message that it won't install with this version of windows. I have not tried to partition D drive yet.

I have dual booted Mandrake 7.1 and 8.2 with Windows XP. I haven't tried Red Hat, but as Mandrake is based on Red Hat, I can't see there being any problems.

Linux will not install onto a Windows partition (FAT32 etc..), you will need some free space on your hard drive so that Linux can create it's own partitions during the setup.
