(I have Win98se, OE 6.0, IE 6.0, Dell Dimension XPS T450MHz Pentium III)

Hello, I wonder if anyone ever received an error message from Grisoft (AVG) Free:

Something bad happened in the application. Error diagonostic file saved to C:/program files/Grisoft/AvgFree/AvgCC.err

I don't seem to see anything else on the screen that might tell me something's wrong...but I fear that it may not function as security anymore?

Thanks very much for any suggestions. Adela

suggest you follow the path using explorer (start > run > explorer) to the .err file and read it. Post it here (copy and paste it into your reply) if you need more help.

It would appear the error information is located in this file.
Once locate and opened, it may be a "program dump" file which may be difficult to understand. If it is short and has some apparent and understanding text, post it.
ALSO -- See this thread and response from AVG forum moderator

UPDATE -- see Sparow beat me to the post :p

Thanks so much, sparrow and Dennis. I went to Explorer, and at the left column where text names are, I found program files, grisoft and AVG Free. At the right space where the little graphics are, I found only one with the .err ending and I tried to open it but couldn't copy it so as to paste it at this forum. Do you know how I can do that? I opened it to "properties" but it didn't let me copy it, but I don't know whether this was what's needed.

I forgot to tell you that at the same time I got that msg I also got this one: "AVG 7.0 EXCEPTION ".

Thanks again for helping get that info into here... Adela

P.S. Thanks for giving me the AVG forum. I'll be sure to search for similar problem.

    Left click on .err file.
Click on "Select a program from List "
    Choose "Notepad "
    "OK" from screen.
Notepad will try to read the file, assuming it is a text file, should be no problem.
Hold down Ctrl key and push A, all of the text should be highlighted.
Hold down Ctrl key and push C, and open up a reply to this thread.
Hold down Ctrl key and push V, should have it copied into this thread.

Hi again, I kept trying to copy this program, so I clicked the right mouse on the text part and clicked on "Send to" and it got on my OE email. I did the same on the little graphic side, so I now have the 2 attachments, one on each email space, so if it is what you needed to help, then how do I send these 2 attachments to you? Adela with thanks!!!!

Adela, we aren't trying to get you to email anything. The file in question can be opened in Notepad simply by doubleclicking it. After you do this, a little window will appear asking you what program to open it with, and there is a list of all your programs there. Pick Notepad, if asked about Wordpad instead after you picked Notepad, select Yes.
When it opens, go to the toolbar at Edit, then select Select All. When done correctly, everything in Notepad/Wordpad is highlighted. Then go back to Edit, select Copy.
Now in a reply to this webpage, right click anywhere where you would normally type in a reply, and select Paste.
Everything that was in Notepad/Wordpad should now be on this webpage, ready for you to click on the Submit Reply button.

Thank you, Dennis and Mark for your patience. I did double click on the little graphic AvgCC.err but all it brought was a window saying: "Windows cannot find program.exe. Location of program.exe:" (then in the little narrow white window below it only shows: "C:\ " )

I tried it several times starting from scratch. Do you happen to know why? Adela

Hi Dennis, I did double click on the file icon and it was when I got this msg: "Windows cannot find program.exe. ***This program is needed for opening files of type '.ERR File.'*** Location of program.exe:" (then in the little narrow white window below it only shows: "C:\ " )

The phrase within *** I had forgotten to include before but I didn't find here the HTML function. I tried it again this morning before I answered you, but still gives me the same result... Adela

    same prob

    Hiya

My friends comp is having the same prob, running Win ME.

Opening the .err file in notepad has no contents but wordpad gets the job done.

    Highlights include:
    Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION
Fault address: 01F269E2 <module file name get failed with error 87 for module 011D0000>

    Call stack:
    Intel specific method

Address Frame Param 0 Param 1 Param 2 Param 3 Logical addr Module
    01F269E2 0068F8B4 FFFFFFFF 0068F8D0 00446B08 0068FD7C <module file name get failed with error 87 for module 01DD0000>

Does this paste mean anything to anyone?

Interesting that both PCs are running non-XP OS

<<sparrow Try start > run > notepad and do file > open and browse to the file and click open. >>

Hello sparrow, I'm embarrassed that with so many generous good advice I haven't been able to do it! But since you are all so patient, I'm still trying:

I just did start/run/notepad/file/open...but it showed me only the folders of "My Documents" without the rest of the files I have there... I know for sure I don't have this file (C:/program files/Grisoft/AvgFree/AvgCC.err) within "My Documents "...I'm so sorry that I'm still confused.

I would let it go if I knew for sure that this error msg from Grisoft is not causing something that I may discover when it's too late??? BTW, the msg didn't show up anymore.

    Thanks again! Adela

    Hi Adella,

The "File of type" (lower circled) arrowhead must be clicked first to pull down the menu so you can click "all files ".

Then the "Look in" window (upper circled) arrowhead pulls down the inverted 'tree' showing the subfolders which you can open by dbl-clicking them to see subfolders beneath them. When you get to the one containing your file, the file will show up in that window, and dbl-clicking it will open it.

Hi again, sparrow, and I understand now. I was able to find, and click on "All Files" and the inverted "tree" but this "tree" was composed of only my desktop icons and folders. Is it right? I wonder if my having win98 makes this difficult to find?

It seems I'm a lost cause, but I do thank you so much for trying so hard to help me. :) Adela

Try This: Left click once on the file icon to highlite it. Next, while holding down the shift key, right click on the file Icon and a menu appears. Choose "open with" in that menu with a left click. You should now see a menu that includes notebook among others. Left click on that and hopefully the text should appear. Good Luck

When rt-clk-ing, there's no need to hold the shift key; same menu without.

Thank you sparrow and beanman2K. I'm back trying.
sparrow: I was able to follow the path as you explained it, up to only "AvgFree ". I then tried Windows Explorer, followed the path you gave me...and realized I hadn't changed it to "All Files ". I did and...voilà! Found the AVGCC.err Notepad (which I perceived as a long list of garbled letters, phrases, etc).

Is this what you guys will help decipher??? If so, do I copy and paste here?

Thanks to everyone who helped me find this elusive .err file! Adela
