I am new to XP and I am having problems setting up a new computer to connect to a Novell server and a Windows 2000 server on startup. It will log in okay to the Novell server but will not login to the 2000 server. The servers will use the same login and password for this computer.

You said "but will not login to the 2000 server ".

What are you trying to do? What sort of connection(s)?

How is your network structured? NT domains, 2000 AD, what?

I have to have the workstation log into two differenet servers because of the proprieitary software that is running for the workstation. Under Windows 98, I would login to the Novell server and then it would automatically login to the 2000 server. I then could run the programs that I needed from each server. However, when the workstation starts up it will login to novell like it should but will not login to the 2000 server correctly.

Are you getting any errors/messages? Are you using the Novell client? If so, what version of client?

No error messages, it just doesn't login on startup.

    previous questions asked and unanswered:

    1. How is your network structured? NT domains, 2000 AD, what?

    2. Are you using the Novell client? If so, what version of client?

    New questions:

    1. Are you seeing any errors in the event logs on the client PC?

    2. And I guess I'm confused here. I remember the Novell logon from years ago. I understand how to log on to a 2K server if using a remote control tool of some sort like NetOp, TermServ, etc. I understand how to log on to a system using a domain user name. But I am really not sure what you mean by logging on to the 2000 server.

I will try to do this the best I can. I am using the Novell client for Windows XP. As far as I can tell this is a new client I have been watching for this release and then I switched my machine over to this client. This machine only needs to connect to the Novell server. The new machine that I am setting up must connect to the Novell server and the Windows 2000 server. Under Windows 98, if the login and passwords were set the same, the machine would automatically log in to both servers. However, for some reason the login to the Win 2k server from the new machine is getting the login mixed up. I can login manually but that won't be acceptable for the user of this machine. I have the workgroup for the workstation set to the workgroup of win 2k machine just like I did for the old win 98 machine. I am sure there must be a work around for this but have not found it yet.

Ah so. The light sorta begins to dawn.

You have a novell-centric network. I have seen a couple of those but never worked with them so can't be much help. Looks like, from the lack of good responses, that not many on here can.

I have done admin on an NT network with a couple of Novell servers but it wouldn't behave at all the same. I seem to remember (3.11 or something) that Novell pretty much has you log on to a server that acts as gatekeeper and controls your behavior. NT, OTOH, will have a server that validates your account and then lets you do what your permissions allow. Similar idea but very different in practice.

From what I can read, Novell says the client piece will do exactly what you want it to. OTOH, the 4.83 version seems to be a beta. Not sure which version you are running.

I did find some critical updates for the Novell Client for 2K/XP that are recent and some might deal with your problem. Take a look Here.

You might do better to post your question on a bbs that is more Novell-aware like This one.

Sorry can't be more helpful but the red stuff just ain't my thing.

    map drive

Why not just map a drive to the resources you need to use on the 2000 server. It will ask once for the correct credentials make the drive persistent (can't remember what it actually says in the check box but it's pretty obvious).
If you want to do from a command prompt just typ net use X: \\yourserver\yourshare / persistent | yes

I mapped the drive, but it didn't ask for any credentials until I go to login. I will try the login idea and see what happens. The machine is down now and I will have it tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
