My 98se system died recently and I replaced it with xp-sp2 but cannot now open a 3-1/2 inch floppy that I had regularly used with the old system. It has an .eml extension. I can't find any solution in help options.

wetcoast--An .eml file is an Outlook Express email. Right click on it|Open With. Is Outlook Express one of the options? If so, choose it|OK. If not, click Choose Program. Now is OE offered? If so, highlight it|OK. Any luck?

The PUB say that windows media does not recognize the extension and of course it was originally copied from an email. It says that the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. IJ've not compressed it - - it's a regular floppy. Should I download some codecs (whatever they are)?

Right click on an .eml file and choose open with. Then, as Jim said, choose Outlook Express and then put a checkmark in the box next to the line that says always use the selected program to open this type of file. Then try double clicking on an eml file and see what happens.

Sounds to me like eml files somehow got associated with media player. If so, this should fix it.

Welshjim/zander - - thank u both for your suggestions but I've tried all of the options with no success before I posted. Under recommeded programs:
    IE
    OE
    Windows picture and fax view
    Other programs:
    Adobe reader 7.0
    Notepad
    Paint
    Windows media player
    Wordpad

Nothing will open the floppy. An error ID = 0xC00D1199 Condition ID 0x00000000 appears
    I don't understand why a floppy perfectly functional with 98se won't perform under xp=sp2.

Is the program you're using crashing when you try to open the email? If so, what program is it that gives you this error? You have to use an email program to open the file. Media Player, paint, notepad, IE etc. can't do it. It has to be a program like Outlook Express, Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.

Do this. Open windows explorer and click tools>file options>file types. Scroll down the list and under the extensions column, find EML. Click on it once to highlight and then click the advanced button. In the window that opens, double click on open. Now another window should open. What does it say under application used to perform this option? Copy and paste it here so we can see.
