    Hi,

    System Info: -

    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2400MHz
    Bus Speed: 133MHz
    Mobo: Sis-648
    BIOS: Phoenix 6.00 PG
    Mem: 512MB
    HDD: Seagate 80GB
Sound: SB Audigy 2 Platinum External
Graphics: NV IDA Ge Force4 MV 420
    OS: Windows 2000/XP (Partitioned)

    Problem: -

I was sitting there listening to the radio stations on i-tunes through the earphones, then all of a sudden the PC crashes giving a strange crackling noise in the earphones.

Now on boot up I get the memory count, then It carry's on to detecting the drives. no drives are detected (HDD or DVDRW) It then re-boots and asks me to insert system disk. Thers is no power at all to the DVDRW at any time.

would this be a power supply problem or and Mother Board problem?

    Thanks

    Tim

When it firsts beeps (the POST or Power On Self Test beep) it should say something like press del to enter setup on the screen.Do this.
Check to see if the drives show up in bios.

It sounds to me like either a drive failure or cable failure.
It is possible that the drive failed and caused damage to the IDE controller on the motherboard. If all drives are not showing in bios and replacing the ribbon cables does not help, then I would say you need a new motherboard.
    How to configure your bios
will give you a guide to navigating the bios to check.

    Hi

No drives show up in the BIOS either! At first I couldn't get into the BIOS so I reset it by using the jumpers also by removing the battery and putting it back in. now it will let me in but no drives detected - I have tried 5 drives still no luck. will see if I can get hold of some spare leads?

    cheers

Sounds like power supply may have failed. You need to try the drives as slave in another computer before attacking the motherboard! And if they are accessible there, try another power supply in this box.

Putting a new mobo in a box with a questionable power supply is asking for trouble.

I can run the drives through a external USB power supply, and the drives will load up, but slowly. Wouldn't run with new IDE cables. Will get a new supply after work! hopefully It is the problem.

    cheers
