I have installed mozilla suite on a friends mac with OS X. He’s not very expert in the operating system and I have little desire to learn it.

The problem is that after I quit Mozilla from the top left Mozilla menu (just after uploading a couple ldif files from my windows-based Mozilla program, perhaps coincidentally) , Mozilla went Haywire.

The main mail box just moved to the "local olders" box and the other two disappeared, thogh the mail folders were still there to be rescued.

I did find that his old firefox was still installed so deleted that and updated to newest Mozilla. But then I realized I hadn’t deleted old preferences, settings etc -- and couldn’t find out where the heck they were because MAC’s crazy directory system doesn’t seem to show them.

Anyway, any help or sources of help appreciated. MAC site not much help.

I don't know much about Macs either, but the removal of Firefox, new or old was unnecessary, since Firefox is a browser only, with separate profiles from Mozilla. It may help to know which version Mozilla you were trying to get going.
In short, I have no idea what you did. I can direct you to some Mac experts, but you will have to give better explanations.

Sounds like a problem with profiles.
Often if you close firefox or mozilla, and they are set to do something which takes time on close and then you reopen them, they cannot load your profile (it is in use) so they load a default profile.

In windows you use the command line
    mozilla /p
    or
    Firefox /p
to launch the profile manager to switch back to your profile.

I finally got what you meant. Of course, I don't know what Macs are like.
    But in a pc, I select start|Run|mozilla or netscape<keyboard space>p
The effect is the same as adding a -p (with the keyboard space) to the Target line of the Shortcut.
There is no way to tell, unless you know or look very closely. The PM does not come up without the keyboard space.

How did you upload the ldif files? when you copy them from Windows machine, did you change the permission? (Sometimes the permission could be 000 when copied from Windows.)

Otherwise, try creating a new user profile (for Mozilla), and see if it helps.
(To create a new user profile, hold down the option key while launching Mozilla.)
Please make sure you launch Mozilla or Firefox from your harddisk (or desktop), not directly for disk image.

I don't think there's a need to delete old preferences. But if you want to delete old preferences, look for
    /Users/MacOSXuserName/Library/Firefox

    Also,
It's not crazy. It's UNIX based file system, works perfectly.
Shall I call Windows directory system ridiculous?

    Absolutely.
