lanime--What procedure are you using to reinstall the icon? What is the error message you are getting?
You may get some more idea about the error by looking into Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer.

And is this a Sound Blaster X sound card? I seem to recall a known problem with the volume icon if so, but only vaguely. Before I see if I can find that reference, I'd like to make sure by confirming your sound device. Oh...does explorer crash or get fussy before this, forcing a systray icon refresh?

sorry for not giving more detail
i have a creative sb sound card.
but the card before this one was doing the same thing .

to get the icon back and working
    i insert my cd .
go to the command prompt .
    type
    the cd letter
    D: PRESS ENTER
    the next prompt
    i386 --enter
    next prompt type
    cd i386
    then paste this line
    expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

    press enter
    and its back
can some one tell me why this is happening .
    it is quite frustrating.
perhaps my cd is the fault
    thanks
    marty

    sndvol32.exe is a system file ....

I suggest you run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any were replaced look in Event Viewer.

My guess would be that since he was extracting the system file manually, and launching it , it was not updating in system restore and the state manager returned the corrupt version which caused it to fail. Running system file checker would be the best approach.

    volume

    yes i had corrupt files.
but file checker replaced them back in order.
so unles it gives me the same trouble
    i wont know.
it has been like it for some time .
and the method i used to put it back in the sys.
is the only way i know how.
it started when we had a lightening
    flash
and closed my sys.down.i got a blue screen.then shut down.
i thought i had lost my sys.but the volume icon was the only fault
now im an expert at putting it back again .
    strangly
that was the only thing wrong.
    how ever thanks
    im always learning
    thank again
    marty
