Greetings once again, Last night during a thunderstorm we had a close lightning strike, 1 of my 'puters Tried to reboot and I heard a sizzling, then the 'puter froze, powered it down, opened it up and tried restarting it again, power supply runs, cpu fan tries to start but stops, cd/dvd/hd sound like they are running, mon.won't come on :( upon a closer look I see two silver squares to the lower left of the cpu fan that look crispy & bubbled
    Board; Tri-gem computer inc./Imperial 1.04
    Bios; Phoenix 6.00 11/22/2002
I'm sure you folks will confirm my thoughts, "IT'S DEAD JIM" It's the only thing affected by the strike,Yes it's on a power surge strip. Ant thoughts helpful THANX ,Autoholic

    Its dead jim.

It sounds like the bios was set to "Restart after power failure" and the power flickered and it tried to boot and got a surge through to the motherboard.
There may be other components which are dead, but your symptoms (fans start to spin up , then cut off) are typical of a power supply getting tripped to start and then the motherboard not responding to keep it on , or a safety circuit shutting it down.

Silvery bubbly things huh? Without a size it is hard to tell what they are, but one word sums it up, nonrepairable.

If you have a processor in need of upgrade, I would use this as an opportunity to get both a new motherboard and processor.

If you choose to keep the one you have, if it will not boot in a new motherboard, it is probably bad too.
The RAM and Video card could also be damaged and the only way to really tell is to put them in a known good system (and if they have a short you now have two dead systems).
You could inquire at the place you plan to buy a new motherboard and ask if they will test your existing processor, ram, and video card for you .Many do keep older cheap motherboards around just for this purpose.

Agree with oshwyn5. If you rebuild, suggest you get a new power supply; wouldn't subject a new board to one struck by lightning or something else. A great opportunity to build a new computer!
