When attempting to view an .eml attachment from an email message, the pop-up window tells me that I do not have a program to open file. I don't know what program I'm missing, supposed to use, nor do I know how to set it up? I'm using Internet Exp. 5 and Outlook Express 5 - Windows 98 4.1 plenty of memory, plenty of hard drive space. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks, dlc

    Donna Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

We need to know what type of file the attachment is. More precisely the file extension, check the file name and tell us the three letters that come after the .dot

Outlook should open the EML file.
In the popup, scroll and select OE, tick Always use this program ".

The pop up says open with - but there is no OE program option to (tick) select. Where can I go to find it?

Yes, I thought the .eml attachments should open in the messages too. Thanks.

    From the link Brett posted:

How to configure Windows to open .eml extension attachments

Click Start | Settings | Folder Options | File Types
Scroll to Outlook Express Mail message and double click it.
    Double click 'open'.
In "Application used to perform this action" enter the following:

    "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1

Click OK to close the window

ps, To avoid any mis-interpretation error, I would suggest that you copy the entire command line to your Clipboard and Paste it in the appropriate field. Include the quotation marks or else it won't work.

Gee guys, I did what you said, but there is no registered file type that says outlook express or outlook express mail. I wonder why it's not there? The only outlook file in the folder options is outlook bar shortcuts and outlook item template. Please stay with me on this. Thanks.

In the popup Open With window, does MSIMN appear?

If so, that is Outlook Express. Select it, tick the Always Use and see if that works.

There is a msimn file- I did select it. but the attachment still does not open.

Update on reply - Now when I try to open attachment it sends a dup message behind the original. very strange.

I went back into the folder options under settings and it shows EML as a registered folder. That's the one we just created by selecting msimn - due to it was not there before.

I need to delete that since it's not doing what we needed? Correct?

Donna, when I navigate to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types and scroll down to the EML listing I can do as was suggested in Bretts link. I don't have a listing for Outlook Express per se, just that EML listing.

If you have neither , presumably you will need to add it in order to have a registered program to open those files with. That's strange since it's usually provided by default when initially loading OE.

There is a way to have OE do a self repair by going to Add/Remove programs and selecting it's listing as if to remove it. Then it will give a menu screen for repair or remove.

Keep looking and reporting what you find and I'm sure the problem can be solved without going to any extreme measures.

Whitphil's method would be the least trouble if you can make it work.

I looked into the add/remove program in the control panel and the outlook express is not there, nor the msimn?

I am running it but it's not showing up anywhere???

I know this is hard believe, It is a program file - but why isn't it showing up as one?

Udate on reply - Now that we have the ELM file folder - can we edit it? I need to know what to put in the content category? The rest I think is already on there.

Try this reg file. From Notepad, Copy and paste the bold, and then save it as {anyname}.REG. (Eg: EML.reg

Then double click to add it to the registry

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml]
@= "Microsoft Internet Mail Message "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\ShellEx]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @= "{EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3} "

**Note: at the very end of the last line, hit the {Enter} key for force a carriage return.

Okay - did the copy and paste and got it into the registry just fine.

Had to do it twice though, the 1st time, I had forgotten to hit the enter key on the last line. Will it hurt for it to be in there twice?

Now, when I click on the attachment in outllook it pops up with -
"This file does not have a program associated with it - to perform action create association in my computer by clicking view and then clicking folder option." So now I need to do something with those folder options again? Help me!

Donna - if those mails contain no information which you wish to keep private, would you mind forwarding one to me?

    Ok, (going in circles, unfortunately):

Now, try again, open the EML file, and from the Open With, select MSIMN, etc.

    What happens?

If nada, or instead of even trying, use the following REG file which should combine both efforts

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml]
@= "Microsoft Internet Mail Message "
    "Content Type "= "message/rfc822 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\ShellEx]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @= "{EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3} "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message]
@= "Outlook Express Mail Message "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\DefaultIcon]
    @= "C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE,-4 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell\open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE\" /eml:%1 "
