For some reason I can't fathom, OE stopped checking the spelling in my emails. The spelling icon is shaded out and can not be selected. Any clues??
I have attached a shot of the "About" screen so you can see the version.

See if the fix on this page gets things back to normal.

If you're not running XP, see this page.

Well I followed all the suggestions and the spelling was still grayed out. I did it again and still gray.
Got to frustrated to fight this anymore this day.
I installed Office 2003 and all the updates. Shut the computer down and rebooted. Now it is not grayed out any more. Who knows what fixed it but it is working now.

More than likely installing office is what fixed it. In order for the spell checker in OE to work you have to have MS Word (older versions of MS Works will do too) installed. OE's spell checker relies on those. If something gets broke somewhere in Word, or if you don't have it installed, OE's spell checker won't work. If you didn't have Word installed before that would be the reason. If you had Word installed and reinstalled it, more than likely there was a problem with it in Word and reinstalling it fixed it.

I never had Office or any of the programs on this computer. The computer came with Microsoft Works, but since my main computer is down I needed to use some Office components. So I installed Office 2003 and viola, it works just fine now.
    Thanks to all.
