I am running XP home edition. AVG is telling me that I have the Java/Byte Verify. One spot says its archived the other says its embedded.I thought I had gotten rid of it earlier today as scans showed it gone. Now tonight it is back. (This is on my laptop only). I do not know how to get rid of it or where it is coming from. I read to go to control panel click on java and empty cache but I do not know what or where cache is. Can someone please help me? Thanks so much!

It is a false positive from AVG. ByteVerify is a problem with Microsofts JVM and the scanner is picking up class code which would exploit that hole. Since Sun's libraries won't run under MS's JVM, you have nothing to worry about.

Do you have Sun's java , or Microsoft's javaVM? If you have sun's go to control panel, click on java, click cache and clear. If you have Microsoft's uninstall it and download Sun's java.

If you have Java 1.5 (About button) on the General Tab - on the General tab > Temporary Internet Files - hit Delete Files. This will clear the cache. You can, if you wish hit Settings and set the cache value to zero.

If you do not have the latest version go to the download URL mlegg10 posted and download Windows Offline Installation (~16 Mb) and install it. Although the online installation shows only 221Kb you will still download about 16 Mb in total once you connect.

If you have sun java, you should have a java control panel in the windows control panel . It will tell you what version you have. It can also automate updating your java.

Remember, if you have XP , when you find a virus you need to turn off system restore to delete the infected "archived" files.

    How to disable system restore
