A friend who knows less than I has lost the ability to dial out from his ME system. I walked him through START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SYSTEM INFO/COMPONENTS/PROBLEM DEVICES in trying to diagnose his problem over a voice line, and we found that he has a 'Problem Device' which gives the following cryptic info (which I can't recognize) which may or may not be his problem. Can anyone shed any light on this? The text under 'Problem Devices' is: ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IR..... PNP device Id ACPI\*PNP0C0F\00000003 Error code 22

    Thanks, I hope.

    To get you started:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272291 and is probably not the problem.

Losing dialup may be due to:

Modem went bad - go into the Device Manager > expand modem > properties > diagnostics.

The line is bad - pick up the hand set and press or dial 1, any noise? It should be silent.

The ISP's servers are slow or down.

    Regards - Charles

    abbeyhurst--Perhaps three other ideas.
1)Repair IE/OE. (As you know IE and OE are closely related.) Start|Run|type msinfo32|OK|Tools|are you offered Internet Explorer Repair Tool (or something like that)? If so click on it|Wait|Reboot when finished. (Some versions of IE do not have this tool.)
2)OE Tools|Accounts|highlight account now used|Properties|go through each tab and write down the settings, especially General and Servers tabs and Port info on Advanced tab. (Or does any of the info look suspicious?) Then go back to the Accounts window and Remove this account. Now set up an OE account using the following procedure and the settings you copied earlier.
    http://www.webzervice.com/manual/Tutorials/outlook.htm
    3) If your friend is paying for the email service, perhaps a call to the provider? Normally you will need the info for suggestion #2 to be supplied by the provider, but I was trying to avoid having your friend calling them unless you need the info, especially for the Servers tab.

Charlesvar and welshjim: Thank you both for your prompt replies/help..... this is such a great place to go for civilized help! Charlesvar - I had already walked him through those processes and the diagnostics indicated that there was no problem with the modem, although I seem to remember another more thorough test that you can invoke....? I also had him plug a telephone handset to the incoming line to ensure he had a dialtone, etc. The modem is still suspect at this point. Welshjim - this is good info on the IE repair tool, I never knew that existed.. Also the procedure of re-establishing the ISP account is a good thought and we'll try that.... knowing MS can occasionally get things honked up, this just may work.

Thank you both very much... I'll post the resolution to it when we find it.

    Code 22
The text displayed for this error code differs depending on the circumstances.

    • If this device is disabled because you disabled it using Device Manager, the following text is displayed:
This device is disabled. (Code 22)

Click Enable Device to enable this device.
    Solution button: Enable Device
    • If the device is not started, the following text is displayed:
This device is not started. (Code 22)

Click Start Device to start this device.

    Solution button: Start Device
    • If the device is disabled by a driver or program, the following text is displayed:
This device is disabled. (Code 22)

You can't enable this device because it has been disabled by a Windows driver.
    Solution button: None
This code means that the device is either disabled or has not started.

To resolve this error code, follow the recommended solution. For the third case, try removing the device in Device Manager, then redetecting it using the Add New Hardware wizard. If the problem persists, try a clean boot to rule out software interference. If the error persists, contact the hardware manufacturer.
