When I am sent a <pdf> file, and I try to access it, I get a message which says. xxx.pdf is not a valid win 32 application.
    I have pdf installed.

Why cannot I use it. ?

Either your Adobe Reader is out of whack, or you have been sent files with what is called a "double extension ".
You may read "Document.Pdf" as the name, but it may actually be "Document.Pdf.Exe ". Instead of a file you read, you may have started a nasty program.
This type of situation may be giving the error you have received. You may be infected by a virus about now if it is.

You should enable your file extensions... If I sent you anything.jpg.vbs for example and you don't have the file ext. enabled you would only see anything.jpg and once opened up you have executed the script !

    enable file extensions... for winME
    1) double click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
    2) click the "Tools" menu item and choose "Folder Options "
    3) click the 2nd tab, "View "
    4) click the radio button "Show hidden files and folders "
    5) uncheck the box "Hide file extensions for known file types "
    6) uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files "
    7) agree to the warning that dire consequences might happen
    8) click the "Apply" button in the lower right corner
    9) click the top button "Like Current Folder" so these changes apply to ALL folders on your computer
    10) click the "OK" button on the botton to close the window

I would also go to Adobe Reader site (make sure to get the one for your OS)

Walt--mlegg10 has given good advice that you be sure you have the most recent version of Reader for WinME. There are some new .pdf files that cannot be read with old versions of Reader.
But also try File|Save on the next .pdf file you get. Perhpas you can read the saved version?

Thank you welshjim, mlegg10 and markp62 for your help.

mlegg10 I did what you suggest. Between step 9 and 10
there was a question. "set folders to match current folders
    view, yes no. "
    I clicked yes.
I have adobe 4.0. Is this out of date. ?

    walt--
Yes. Use the link mlegg10 provided and get the latest version suitable for WinMe.
Perhaps this link will take you there directly
