my computer has become sluggish. I have tried running programs such as adware, spybot and spyware doctor. I have also been using ccleaner after each use. I also have Norton Internet SEcurity and virus protection. Sometimes Norton will not run at all. When I try to download update to my antivirus it aborts the process and hwen I try to scan my disk it reboots the system. The first few times I ran adware it found lots of problems, since then every time I try to run it an error message NT//Authoritysystem32 pops up and shuts down my computer. any suggestions or should I just shoot it?

I'm moving this from XP to the virus removal section since I strongly suspect you are infected.

Before the experts even take a look, I suggest you do two things.

    1. Locate your hosts file (on XP it should be in windows\system32\drivers\etc and has no file extension) and rename it to hosts.old since it could well be blocking your access to AV sites.

    2. From quicklinks in my signature, locate a couple of online virus scanning sites and use them to scan for & remove any infections you have.

I really do not see anything unusual there, but then that is a startup list, not the full hijackthis log file.
Run Hijackthis and choose scan and generate a log file
Then when the notepad window opens, copy and paste its contents here.

You need to unzip HJT this into it's own folder, it works better that way.

There are a couple of suspicious files running on your system. One is part of Elitebar.

    checkrun = C:\windows\system32\eliteoei32.exe
    System service63 = C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka63.exe

We would need to see the System Scan from HJT. When HJT opens, click on 'Do a system scan and save a logfile', and you can get better advice on how to remove it all.

First unzip HJT into it's own folder, you are running it out of a zip file right now. It creates backups, and these tend to disappear in a temp folder.

Open HJT, and click on 'Open misc tools section', then click on "Open process manager'. Locate this in the list, highlight it and click on 'Kill Process'.

    C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka63.exe

Now click on the 'Back' button, this button will change to 'Config', click on 'Config' then click on "Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/Paste the following into it.

    C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka63.exe

Then click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select No at this time. Do the same for this one.

    C:\windows\system32\eliteoei32.exe

Rescan with HJT, and remove these items.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteoei32.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

    Reboot into Safe Mode.
Delete all files and folders located in these folders.
    C:\Windows\Prefetch
    C:\Windows\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Temp

    Delete this folder.

    C:\WINDOWS\etb

Clear out the Recycle Bin, then reboot in Normal mode. Please post a new HJT log to see if you are clean.
