Hello. I'm in the process of adding memory to an old system. I have 512 Meg of SDRAM (cl3, 32x8, PC133, non-ecc and unbuffered) in one slot and I want to add the same to my other slot ( 2 slots only). My question is do I need a module that is unbuffered or can I use a buffered module?

    Thanks for any help,
    D.E. :)

Thanks for reply Tony T. MB calls for unbuffered but in looking at the different modules it isn't mentioned if the they are buffered or not, even on the mfg web sight. I guess I'll have to do a little more digging.

    Thanks again,
    D.E.

Buffered or registered RAM adds an extra chip to the RAM which you can think of as caching the data until it is verified that it is at the address it should be.

So you must have two things to use registered or buffered RAM. One is that your motherboard/ controller must support it. The other is that all RAM must be Registered/buffered.

So since you currently have unbuffered RAM, that is what you should buy.

Buy the lowest cost PC133, non-ecc and unbuffered and don't worry. Anything more would waste money.

Hey, you guys are great. This is what I needed. Just an update. I purchased a module but no one could determine if it was buffered or not. The MFG web sight (AMPO) didn't even list it in the specs Anyway it didn't work with the other module so I will return it Friday (full money back within 15 days). I will use the con figurers and see if I can locate a module that they suggest. At least that way I should get a known good configuration. Some strange things happened when I used the new SD RAM module by itself mostly to captured video). When I replaced the original SD RAM those strange things kept happening. I wonder what I did now. Could be I originally had some dirty contacts or something...I don't know. Anyway I have to recapture some video and see if the strange things persist.

    Thanks again,
    D.E.
    :)
