Can anyone tell me about (cheap) Remote Control software available? I want to be able to assist my father through such remote control. Fixing problems is difficult if you don't see the screen.

I have a 640 kb adsl connection but he's on a dialup. How does that influence the process?

    Your help will be appreciated

May I join this thread? Steve, you sound like an advertisement for PCAnywhere! You also sound like an expert, so may I cross examine?

I needed to establish remote access to another computer which is running XP home (I’m running W98se). After trying and failing to connect via XP’s remote assistance feature (see thread 98-XP remote assistance ), I tried PCAnywhere 10.0. Then I learned PCAW 10 was not compatible with XP, so I uninstalled it and restored the XP system.

However, undaunted, I also need to establish a remote with another 98 machine, so I went ahead and installed the full program on both 98 machines so I could use either host or remote on both . STILL having problems. Maybe you can assist with some advice, since Symantec’s replies to my posts have been one or two sentences with referrals to their tech bulletins.

I am trying to establish connections by internet. I used winipcfg.exe to ascertain IP addresses for both the host and remote. I put 255 subnet as the last entry. I never get anything. the host waits while the remote waits for the selection of hosts to appear.

Zone Alarm is on both machines. Allowing an internet pass to the net for the remote, when it asked permission, did not work. So I went into ZA’s "advanced" under security, and entered the ip address for the host computer under "other computers," making sure that the subnet was listed in the last section of the quartet. That didn’t work. ZA has no help files on board, their help button takes you online for non searchable help. I was unable to find anything on port configurations in ZA, and I know PCAW has default port requirements - so I don’t know if it’s a port problem.

All right. Next: I shut down ZA on both computers, and I still have the same problem.

What am I doing wrong? I feel like I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill, but I can't get past the molehill. help . . . I've been fighting with this issue for two days now, and making zero progress.

P.S. I’m having fits with my dialups now, passwords are no longer saved, the save function is grayed out, lots of intermittent connection-failure behavior, although this may be from having installed and then removed the msn messenger program so I could try to communicate with XP files on my machine. I wish I were as happy with PCAW as you are! :)

The "quote" marks were my attempt to give credit for having copied the info above from PCA's web site:)

Even though I've used PCA for years, I'm getting way behind in the technology. The simple mothod for connecting requirs a "static" ip on the receiving end. I do know that it can be done without a static ip but this is where I too get lost. Look in the help file for connecting via a "port" that you'll have to open....
