Hi, if i open a file in a directory with a space in the name or if any of the parent directories have one then the first part of the directory attempted to opened eg:

if i open C:\Program files\pov-ray for windows\pic.bmp (by double clicking it, from the folder) then a prompt appears saying
    Paint(Title)
    C:\Program.bmp can't be opened
    OK(the only option)

    or if i open

    C:\Windows\profiles\living room\desktop\pic.bmp
    Paint(Title)
    C:\Windows\profiles\living.bmp can't be opened
    OK(the only option)

But if i open it though the open box in MSPaint its fine, this also occurs with .doc(if opened with Word97) but if I open the .bmp with ImageAnalzyer by rightclicking the file and choosing it on the dropdown list it works fine

MSPaint, Notepad, MSWord are the only applications affected as far as tell

Go to Run and type Regedit. Go to the following key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\shell\open\command

Double click on Default in the right hand pane and then copy and paste the value in your next post and we can go from there.

    Okay, let's try this:

    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. On the menu, click on 'Tools', 'Folder Options'
    3. Click on 'File Types'
    4. Press 'W'
    5. Scroll down to 'WINWORD'
    6. Click on 'Edit'
    7. Double-Click on 'Open'
    8. In the box labeled "Action used to perform action" make sure there is a ' "%1 "' (or percent sign 1) after the path and file name. Note the double quotes surrounding the '%1' SAMPLE: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" "%1"
    9. Click on 'OK'
    10. Click on 'Close'
    11. Click on 'Close'

Reboot and try again. Let me know how you make out.

I highly doubt that adding the %1 is causing the crash when you log on. Do you have Paint loading at startup? What error are you receiving when you log on?

RayBritton, do you happen TweakUi installed? and do you have the option found under the Paranoia tab checked to 'log application errors to FAULTLOG.TXT'?
If so, this file located in the windows folder will have some of those 'Details'.

And is this what you mean when you say you added "%1" to mspaint?

This is the shell open command for extentions associated with mspaint: For example in this particular case bitmap image.
    "C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\MSPAINT.EXE" "%1 "
The path must be the where location of mspaint of is. The usual defaulted place is c:\program files\accessaries\mspaint.exe

Notepad may be a lillte bit trickier. When using folder options>file types tab list you'll have Text Document on the list and the value will be
    C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
but using regedit and viewing the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT values for txtfile it would be: (txtfile shell open command is as follows)
    "C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE %1 "

I must add that I have a question or two on the changes you've made for microsoft word document but if what you've done hasn't caused any problems I guess I can let those questions ride.

Speaking of tweakui it has an "association fix" on the repair tab. I wonder if this would be of any value? I don't know exactly how thorough the fix is and if it will repair the little reg open command glitches your having but I thought I'd mention it. Are you backing up the reg before making these changes as a precaution?

    Hi again RayBritton,
I'm happy to see this problem has been fixed. Thanks for the update.

*Can you sum up exactly what you did and how you did it, please?
*Can you include, just out of pure curiosity on my part, what the systray glitch was?
*What was missing in your OPEN commands or what did the original problematic lines reflect, if you can remember (again this is pure curiosity).
*You got any idea or gut feeling, at all, on what caused the whole "hair puller" in the first place?

Any summarization you supply will help others as well as serve as record of the fix for yourself. Should you have this problem again and not remember what you did to fix it, it will always be found in the "Archives" of past posts.

    And....your most welcome. :)

    To funny.... :D

In other words you scratched your head crossed your fingers and toes, used suggestions given (?sorta?) "flew by the seat of your pants" and hoped for the best. All was a blur and details are foggy or a mystery. In the end all came out right....and that's what counts.

A method all of us are familiar with and find ourselves using quite often.

Thank you for taking the time to re-address your post and try to wrap it up. This was still kind of you and appreciated.

If using WinExplorer or double clicking on "My Computer ">via the toolbar>view>folder options...Via the "File Types" tab {Scroll to 'Microsoft Word Document' in the list} the association for Microsoft Word Document as reflected by my win98 is:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
but the "DDE Message" value, which must be checked and enabled relects the "%1" as follows:
    [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen( "%1 ")]
"Application" field has "Winword " in it.

In my reg [hkey_classes_root] In the left pane folder list is word.document.8 the default for Shell Open command, found as a subfolder in the left pane list under word.document.8 is
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
with another subfolder of ddeexec and the Default value is
    [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen( "%1 ")]
    which has two subfolders:
Application with a Default value of "WinWord "
Topic with a Default value of "System "

NOTE: Values are found in the Right pane
    ----------
Among the scrollable list for folder options>File types tab is "Write Document" The bolded default is Open and when double clicked on is C:\Progra~1\Access~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1 "

In the registry this is:(found in HKEY-CLASSES_ROOT)
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1]
    @= "WordPad Document "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Insertable]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Protocol]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Protocol\StdFileEditing]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Protocol\StdFileEditing\Server]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\WORDPAD.EXE "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Protocol\StdFileEditing\Verb]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\Protocol\StdFileEditing\Verb\0]
    @= "&Edit "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\DefaultIcon]
    @= "C:\\Program Files\\Accessories\\WORDPAD.EXE,1 "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\open\command]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\WORDPAD.EXE \ "%1\" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\print]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\print\command]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\WORDPAD.EXE /p \ "%1\" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\printto]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\printto\command]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\WORDPAD.EXE /pt \ "%1\" \ "%2\" \ "%3\" \ "%4\" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\CLSID]
    @= "{73FDDC80-AEA9-101A-98A7-00AA00374959} "

I got a bit lazy and decided to export my registry hkey for "Write Document ". The bolded text directly above can be used for a reg patch. It must be fixed though. There are spaces, in the strings which should not be there. Are you familiar with these? You can also manually check for the hkey and values [@= value].

NOTE: This export also included the nonbolded actions of print and printto
    ----------

I hope I haven't confused you and you have become familiar enough with the association procedures from your previous experiences with notepad and paint to be able to fill in any holes I have left in these instructions.

    ----------
I can't remember what I must do to take the spaces out of the registry patch. Can anybody refresh my memory?

To take the spaces out of the registry patch, suggest you open it in notepad and do ctrl-h to open find/replace. type a space in the find and nothing in the replace. Be sure word wrap is off (don't know how essential that is) and click replace all.
