    Hi!

I purchased an XP Upgrade SP2 cd from E-Bay. It is NOT OEM or Academic. It has the MS hologram product key and the sellers says it has never been registered. However, it appears to be volume licensed as if licensed for a University Student. Will I have a problem when I install and register? Will MS be looking for the registration to be part of the university?
    I hope I didn't make a mistake in buying....

Honestly I would never buy an XP CD from Ebay or any source other than a retailer who sells them boxed and unopened... (EG: Best Buy, Circuit City, any like that, or e-sites that are retail sellers)

You may as well install it and see how it goes. It will definitely ask for the key when you install it, and then it will check it with MS to see if it is good.

If it comes out and says this key has been used to many times you will need to call the 800 # for MS in the box that comes up.

They are very good with their service, remember they are looking to keep piracy down too ! Tell them it is installed on this machine only and they may give you another key to override it. If this happens anytime you ever have to do a format, you will have to go through that procedure of calling all over again.

    Good luck

Yes, I agree I never should have purchased MS software over E-Bay! Trying to $ave a buck or two always backfires! However, I will try the upgrade and see what happens.
    Thanks

The worst case scenario is when you try to run windows update, it says the key is unauthorized and you have to call microsoft and pay for a legitimate key.
