I am helping a friend with a computer that is being bombarded with something McAfee calls PUPs (PopUp....?) which appear to be malware of some sort trying to execute and run. Some we can delete as they show up and others can't be fixed or deleted.

There is an Icon on the Desktop called Win Fixer 2005. There is one reference to this in a post on this board but it was solved relatively easy and I didn't get much information from it. Google search turns up a number of entries but I can't really get a handle on what it is. Searches on McAfee and Symantec gave no results. Anyone have any insight on this?

Just got back from the friend's computer and submit this followup:

Amidst all the McAfee alerts, I was able to get Spybot and AdAware downloaded, installed, and run. Also, was able to use TrendMicro Housecall. After all that and several restarts, all seems to be stabilized now and the alerts have stopped - for now. Holding breath.

Now, another question that may necessiate someone moving this to another forum:

I downloaded Belarc Advisor and it indicated there were a number of Windows XP updates missing (30+) but I couldn't decipher whether SP2 was one of those. I suspect it was. I was reluctant to install the updates until I feel the system has stabilized. I know the updates need to be installed but I am concerned as to how long I should wait before I purse the installs. Newt guided me through this (SP-2) on my computer several months ago and I can retrieve his instructions from then - basically I recall he stressed having your system as clean as possible and all temp/excess files and programs removed. Thanks for any input.
