Is there a way to delete an available toolbar button from the list that is shown in the Customize toolbar dialog box. I did it along time ago and can't seem to remember how to do it again(Ahhh the curse of getting older). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In Februrary 2004 I removed the Word Icon that was associated with MS Works Suite 2002 from the available toolbar buttons list. I did it through the registry, but, I fogot to write the navigation path and procedure that I used. What I would like to do is delete some of the Icons in the Available toolbar buttons list and possibly add my own manually and without using any special program. Do you possibly know the location where these items can be found? It would be fun to see if it can be done. Thanks in advance.

Customize Toolbar. The one just above the address bar and below the menu bar. When you right click on it then choose customize and a Customize Toolbar dialog box appears with two lists, Available Toolbar buttons, and Current Toolbar buttons.

This would be a registry edit.
    Hijackthis should enumerate these as
O3 - Enumeration of existing MSIE toolbars
entries which you can just select and choose fix.
    Hijackthis download]

    or
    Download at majorgeeks

Just download Hijackthis, unzip and extract to a folder such as C:\ProgramFiles\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe
Locate it, right click and send to desktop as a shortcut.
Run it, with all other windows closed, choose scan and select the 03 toolbar entries you do not want and choose fix.

Please note that hijackthis is primarily an enumerator and displays things located in certain areas of the registry and certain system files. This is one of the few entries it is "Ok" for a user to just use hijackthis to fix. (Although if you have any questions you should post a log and ask for help) . Most malware requires more than just removing the entry with hijackthis.

Also, you should first check in add/ remove programs to see if the program which installed the toolbar is there and if so , uninstall it using add/remove programs.

If you are keeping the program, you should check its options to see if you can deselect the toolbar.

If you have any reason to suspect this may be malware, you should post a hijackthis log and ask for help.

I have no malware on my system. I'm just trying to delete certain items off that list. I have done it in the past but can't remember how I did it.

You can do it safely with hijackthis. It is not just for malware identification.

Or you can manually edit the registry to remove the entries.

    Hijackthis just makes it simpler.

Or you may have used one of a number of toolbar removal tools

    Toolbarcop

    Hi lj50,
Are you talking about having added your own toolbar with a button or buttons or are you talking about having added your own button to the list that is available for the "Standard toolbar" that can be modified or customized, allowing you to control which icon buttons are shown on the standard toolbar? Something along the lines of this:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/ext/tutorials/button.asp
    or this:
    http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2005/04/26/ie_buttons.html

While I know you've said you want or prefer to do this yourself, I have found a goodie that will do this for you and delete any that have been previously made or added to the "standard toolbar "s list. Perhaps you like to give this a shot: (I tried it and it works! It was relatively simple to do.)
    See Makobutton:
    http://www.mydesktophelp.com/development.php

NOTE: Deleting any 3rd party added buttons such as ones you add or have added in the past or the ones (as in my case) Messenger or ATI TV added was as simple as selecting the button from the drop down list which makes the delete option available (active/nongreyed) and hit the "delete" button. This api just may detect any you have talked about adding yourself and now wish to delete.

    ========
Why would you want to go this kind of trouble when the IE links bar can much more easily be used to add an icon for anything you wish to run? It's a simple matter to dragNdrop any shortcut you want on it? The shortcut icon (*.ico) can even be customized to look like anything you want. When you don't want the shortcut button/icon anymore, you just delete it. Remember, the links bar can have as much or as little stuff on it as you want. It is totally customizable. You should consider this your own personal built in toolbar, ready to go. It can be anything you want it to be... :) It can be shown, it can be hidden, it can be moved, anything wanted can be dragNdropped, anything not wanted can be deleted, etc. The possibilities are endless. I love my IE Links bar and find it invaluable. You get the idea....

Why do I want to go to the trouble? Because I did last year and can't remember how I did it and I'm not just talking about IE. I've also changed the toolbar in Windows Explorer.

Did either of those first two links ring a bell or the makobutton program help?

I wasn't suggestion that you don't do this as much as supporting an alternative to any future endeavors into hacking the "standard" toolbar. Heaven knows I've added enough hacks and tweaks in my time not to understand the thrill or curiosity.

Perhaps it was something you ran across while on this past quest from the archives:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=34955

That blast from your past does include a sublink with instructions for "Adding a custom toolbar icon to IE standard toolbar ":
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm

In any case, if I understand this, any button added would be under this reg key:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
    or
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions
with it's own GUID number that you generated. The applicable info such as any CLSID for this button should be found in the right pane.

If your not finding these in your registry or prefer aids, perhaps toolbarcop or hijackthis find and remove method, as previously suggested, may find the guids you need. Please note toolbarcop does have the ability to remove "standard" toolbar buttons:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm

Please remember to backup your registry, make a restore point or export any hkeys being modified. Cautious approach can be a comfort and a life saver.

Do you know what the funny thing is about all of this is, I wrote the procedure down after I figured out how to do it and I can't remember where I put it. Your suggestions don't ring a bell yet, but keep 'em comin. I'm sure you or someone else will hit on it. Because if I see something remotely related to the procedure then I'll remember. You probably figured out what will happen next. After Someone gives that clue to what I did and I remember how to do it. I'll find that darned piece of paper with procedure on it. Thanx.

    whoopsy,
I see you've come and gone while I was editing and adding to my last thread. Please reread the stuff I added (by edit) "about and from" your past post, dug up out of the archives.

Interesting enough the added "ati tv" and "messenger" buttons were also located here. Here refering to the hkey named below....
As a side note and off the beaten track my "related button" is found under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions and the related.htm is indeed located in d:\windows\web as shown by the text from the exported reg key:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a}]
    "MenuText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-864 "
    "MenuStatusBar "= "@shdoclc.dll,-865 "
    "Script "=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,\
    00,25,00,5c,00,77,00,65,00,62,00,5c,00,72,00,65,00,6c,00,61,00,74,00,65,00,\
    64,00,2e,00,68,00,74,00,6d,00,00,00
    "clsid "= "{1FBA04EE-3024-11D2-8F1F-0000F87ABD16} "
    "Icon "= ",4 "
    "HotIcon "= ",4 "
    "ButtonText "= "@shdoclc.dll,-866 "

actual display of reg nfo is in attachment:

Giving this a bump. It seems to have exceeded my "two day" show preference. I don't want to lose track of this.

How are you coming along on this? Did any of the newer information help at all? I'm particularly interested in what you've found in the registry hkeys:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
    or
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

Basically found references to Messenger and msmsgs. I'm checking the entries under H_KEY_CLASSES_ROOT so it may take awhile.
