I use Disc Clean-Up to delete Temporary Files (among others) @ the end of every session so I was surprised to come upon a tmp folder with a huge number of files...There's obviously something I don't get & I would appreciate your input. :)
    Regards, Timmins.

Posting the name of the folder may give us some clues - or maybe not :) Have you installed any new software recently?

Go Start > Run > type in %temp% > Enter

This will list all temp files & folders in Documents & Settings and are safe to delete (A couple will be in use and you will not be able to delete those) - does the file show up there?

Timmins--A TMP or a TEMP folder? Is there a name attached? In what directory? What about the contained files? When you right click|Properties, do you see with what program they are associated?

Hi,PeteC & Welshjim. Thanks for replying. I did the run %temp%. The files & folders there, are exactly what I meant. I thought I was deleting these when I run Disc Cleanup...I right clicked some files & checked Properties; many have Read Only ticked, is this why they aren't deleting?

    Regards, Timmins.

PS Does running WindowsXP mean "never having to say you're sorry ", because Delete doesn't REALLY mean Delete? ;)

I must admit to being somewhat confused as to what Disk Cleanup actually deletes in the way of Temporary files - it is not a facility I use.

However I experimented this morning and ran Disk Cleanup on my C:\ drive, selecting Temporary files only ....

    Nothing was deleted from C:\TEMP, C:\ Windows\Temp or C:\Documents & Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp (these are the files revealed by %temp%)

Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP which states 'Remove Windows Temporary files'

but this article appears to refer to Temporary files as Temporary Remote Desktop Files - strange, but not 'from the horse's mouth' :)

I shall continue to delete temp files by running %temp% from the run line -and deleting all except those in use from time to time. The deleted files end up in the Recycle Bin so can be held there for a day or so in case of trouble - never experienced any. In addition I will continue to empty the Windows\temp folder out occasionally.

Temp files basically occupy a bit of disk space and do no harm - program generated temp files are normally deleted automatically when the program is closed - unless it crashes.

I would be most interested in hearing others views/experiences on this - it's all rather basic

timmins--I use a program call System Security Suite.
    http://www.igorshpak.net/
Very flexible in allowing you to set up what you want to delete.
However, I do not have it delete Temp files/folders. I find most of these delete automatically on a regular basis. However, while some of C:\TEMP does not, usually the files/folders there are duplicates of others elsewhere, so can be deleted manually.
