I was unable to access Windows Components via my Disc Clean up program. I received a message " Set Up was unable to open information file msmgs.inf "

I then ran an sfc/ scannow and received the following prompt "files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unauthorized versions "

I dont have XP SP 2 discs as I downloaded it from the microsoft site. I have been unable to delete XP SP2 via the uninstall program as I receive the message " The system cannot find the file identified"

I have scanned for virus's with my Norton which I always keep up to date, and ran Spybot and Adware with neg results.

Would be grateful if anyone can assist

Use the Xp CD you do have, never mind if it is not SP2.

Ideally, you would make your own slipstreamed cd combining your XP cd with the SP2 download.

A simple method is to go to a computer fair or swap meet, and see if you can find an OEM (Like Dell) XP SP2 CD without a product key offered for $10 (or search Ebay) While it will not work for installing on a non DELL (It searches for a "Blessing" or bios entry / chipset identifying the motherboard as a DELL prior to install); it does work for the system file checker.

I do not mean the SP2 upgrade from SP1 cds. I mean the XPwith SP2 full install CDs. Like a DELL Recovery CD for inclusion with a new DELL PC only.

Although increasingly they use the old image file on the hard drive and tell you to burn your own; the full install without a product key are still distributed for IT managers to use for SFC and clean installs (where each machine already has a product key on the case).

Ok, misundertood what you wrote, and it would be simpler just to get the SP2 cd and then later create a slipstream install cd.

No problem. I am new here and have to get used to expressing myself clearly on matters which I take for granted that others will understand . Often this is not the case.

Thanks guys for all the input.

Actually I have ordered the SP2 CD from microsoft but they estimate a delivery time of 6 weeks !

Anyway in the meantime I managed to download SP2 from http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html by doing a Google search.

I reinstalled SP2 and that has cured my problem, although I am not sure what caused it in the first place !

    Thanks again
