I will try ( and hope I succeed ) to get all needed info posted.

    In XP Pro SP2

Recently I have noticed that in the C:\Windows\Temp Folder there are files named such as DFXXXX.tmp. The Xs represent a varing combination of numbers and letters. Such as ~DFA2B4.tmp With a size of 32,768. All are the same size.

Yesterday I did run an Adaware check, Virus Check ( AVG ) and
    SpyBot. All reported nothing.

After some searching and trial and error work ( and one in a hurry messup ) I find that at least two of them ( sometimes 3 ) are created every time I start this machine. Whether it be a cold start or a warm restart.

Trying to delete them will allow me to delete all but two of them. I get the "File in use and cannot be deleted " message on those that will not delete.

HUH OH !! I gotta go. The 7 year old we are taking care of just locked up the other machine. ON THE INTERNET !! I am HOPING that it just a case of him getting in a hurry and going from one place to the other too quickly.

I would go and reboot to safe mode (either go to start/ run and type msconfig and hit enter and look on the boot.ini tab and change to safe boot, or just reboot and tap F8 once a second until you get the boot options and choose 3 safe mode).
In safe mode, run disk cleanup (start/ run and type cleanmgr and hit enter)
Make sure clean temp files is checked.

Normally appending a tilde (~) to the start of a file means it is marked for deletion.

But the DF would make me think these are fragments of a downloaded file. Do you have aP2P application?

My grandson does that a lot. Once he had thirty two copies of hearts open trying to get one that was different.

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH Christer

After learning AGAIN what I was dealing with I found the file that was loading at boot up and shut it down ( for now )

    No more DFxxxx files.

But will be re-activated As soon as I get this posted.

That my Friend is a very true FACT.

Not only take notes but remember where I put them ( the notes ) but try to remember what I did yesterday.

I have to honestly admit that I forgot about my previous posts.

    Thanks again

    Well, BillyBob,
I have to admit that "Yours Truly" should take notes too and I actually do ...... ...... kind of. I save links to some of the threads that I assume will be good to have further down the path but ...... :( ...... do I remember that I have them?
