Our office needs a way to communicate information aside from email. I was thinking a good option would be an on-line message board and my boss suggested if it could alert people to new messages when they log-on to Outlook or Windows that would be good too.

Is there a product in existence that could provide what we need? There are around 20 of us spread over two buildings and we're running Win XP and Office 2003.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jo

The software that this site uses is from http://www.vbulletin.com/ .

It's fairly inexpensive and has a ton of features. They are several options to email people when new threads are created etc...The file attachment feature can come in handy too.

I understand you are looking to communicate with staff and have stated email is not a preferred vehicle .... But, have you checked / looked at the advantages of group mail, example Yahoo Groups. All posts provide group interaction / message archive. Additional features include shared Calendar, Polls are just some of the many features available for group participation. I'm sure reasonable cost for Bulletin Board approach is out there, but someone has to implement and managed the project .. day to day / week by week. Group mail, the most difficult task (only task), create your username/password. The boss will be happy to know every post / discussion / event will be delivered to users email account. Zero resource co$t is frosting on the cake. Just a suggestion to chew on.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the various options you've posted.
    Cheers,
