I have a strange problem with one of my PC's. When I start it up, the keyboard only works until it starts loading WinXP, then it stops working completely (even numlock key doesn't work). I can still use the PC and type stuff if I control it remotely using Remote Administrator. When I boot it into Xandros (dual boot) then the keyboard works fine. It also works during the post test and I can access the BIOS settings using the keyboard.

I decided to re-install WinXP to resolve the problem but the keyboard stops working as soon as it starts loading WinXP during the installation.

Anyone got an idea of what the problem could be? I use a PS2 keyboard (although I think this is irrelevant).

At first sight this appears to be a Windows Driver problem although the failure during an install is puzzling.

Can you remove it in Device Manager via Remote Admin and reboot to let Windows find it again?

Second step would be to try another keyboard if the above fails.

The funny thing is that it is not listed as a device under Device Manager.

I have since also tried to install Win2000 Prof. with the same result, the keyboard stops working as soon as Windows starts loading. I have to mention that my PS2 mouse also wouldn't work, I have switched to a USB mouse. In fact my Microsoft USB mouse works but my Targus USB mouse also wouldn't work. Really strange problem. Could it be that there is a PS2 setting in the BIOS that only affects Windows (but all versions)? I have selected "Reset BIOS defaults" also with no success.

    Windows just isn't seeing it.

I have checked through the mobo manuals for my 3 desktops and only one has any mention of PS/2 in the BIOS - Asus CUSL2-C and that refers to a setting where the PS/2 is always assigned interrupt 12 regardless of whether a PS/2 mouse is attached or not. So I doubt it's a BIOS thing, especially as it works up to the point Windows loads.

Could be a conflict though ....

    Start > Run > msinfo32 > OK

Hardware Resources > Conflicts - may see nothing as the keyboard does not exist according to Windows.

Is this a recent problem? Did the keyboard work OK ?
