I am using Windows ME and somehow a Word 2000 file in 'My Documents' called "My Catalogue.doc" has given rise to a copy file in the same folder called "~WRL 3588.tmp ". Selecting either file produces a Warning box headed "File in Use" saying, "My Catalogue.doc' is locked for editing by 'another user'. Click 'Notify' to open a read only copy of the document and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.

The warning is accompanied by 3 boxes, Read Only - Notify - Cancel.

Trying to delete either file brings up a warning "Cannot delete, Access denied. File may be in use ".

Neither file is listed as 'Read Only' in Properties. How do I sort this out?

    Kind regards,
    Pat

~WRL 3588.tmp is a Word Temp file which should have been deleted by Word when closed. Providing Word is not open you should be able to delete it - if not boot to Safe Mode and delete it.

Occasionally Word gets it's proverbials in a twist and the dialogue box you note pops up. Generally speaking either cancelling it and then re-opening the file works or simply reopening the file again works.

Thankyou once again Pete. You answered another problem I had some days ago and like that one, this one succumbed to your superior knowledge. In Explorer with Word switched off the temporary file was deleted and it meekly disappeared like a well trained dog without even a whimper. Easy when you know how!

    Kind regards,
    Pat
