I had a clear background for the titles to my desktop icons but out of nowhere I now have a color behind the lettering under my desktop icons.

I would really like to get the clear mode back behind my icon titles again.......

Are you using xp style or classic theme?

Usually this is caused by not having the "use drop shadows for icons" setting enabled as follows:

Right click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties ", click on the "Advanced" tab and in the category Performance click on the "settings" button, on the "visual styles" tab scroll to the bottom of the list. There is a setting entitled "use drop shadows for icons" make sure this is checked (enabled/selected), possibly "use visual styles on windows and buttons" also should be checked.
