   Is there any way of deleting a message without opening it??
   In NS I could close the message window and then highlite the messages
   with Ctrl or Shift and the delete the all at once.

   In OE > View > Layout > Uncheck 'Show preview pane'. Those messages that you wish to open you will then have to doubleclick on in the Inbox or revert back to showing the preview pane.
   
   Any decent antivirus should scan emails either on the way in or on opening.
