    Hello,

earlier this week my optical drives, both of them quit reading disks, unless I reboot, then its fine for awhile. and does it again.
Both drives are in the secondary IDE, a Nec 2500(slave) and nec 3520(master)

I can open and close the trays with software, but have to reboot in order to read disks again..

I upgraded my motherboard drivers a couple of weeks ago, to get Battlefield2 to run stable, Nforce4 v6.66....

I think satan has takin control

i found 1 hit on google with the same problem, but no resolution..

    tia

Perhaps more than a coincidence in that the problem arose after you upgraded the motherboard drivers?

A few things to try ....

Open up the case and remove and reseat the ribbon cables to the optical drives at both ends - with the PC powered down.

Remove the optical drives through Device Manager and reboot to let Windows find them again.

Remove the secondary IDE controller theough Device Manager and reboot ...

Check in Device Manager that DMA is enabled for the drives.

Check for any firmware updates for the optical drives.

Possibly temperature related - are your case fans up and running. You can check mobo and CPU temps either in BIOS (generally - and fiddly to access) or using Everest (freeware).
