In Win 98SE, there is a program called "scanreg /fix or "scanreg /opt" to repair registry.
I know that XP has System Restore. Does XP have an equivalent ScanReg either fix or opt?

    In a nutshell, no.

A System Restore will restore the registry as well as other items.

There ARE utilities around that just backup the registry.

You are obviously having problems. Can you detail what they are?

    It seems I have a problem....only one???
Every once in a while, when on a web-page, I get a blue screen with white letters and it only flashes for a moment or so. ......can't read it, since I don't expect it, and when I focus on the blue screen, it disappears. I did see some words like: a problem was detected and has to shut down. It shuts, then re-starts and tells me the problem has been repaired.
Since this happens occasionally, I don't know what date to choose for a system restore.
I don't know what causes the problem....since I don't have time to read the cause.
(incidentally, the blue screen I referred to above is not the Blue Screen Of Death in Win98

    A couple of questions:

    1. XP Pro? Home?
    2. SP2?
    3. Security patches up to date?
    4. A full virus scan run?
    5. Spyware checks done?
    6. Startup apps reviewed and eliminated, if unnecessary?

Go to 'My Computer' > Properties > Advanced > click 'settings' button under 'Startup and Recovery' and uncheck ''Automatically restart'. Then you'll be able to see the blue screen and please let us know what it says.

It didn't take long for another BLUE SCREEN. I was on www.pcpitstop.com to do a test on computer (an excellent web-site....been using it for years. However, this is first time with my XP).
When the BLUE SCREEN popped up, of course I couldn't see or use my mouse. So, here is a brief description of the SCREEN:
"Problem detected; Windows shutdown to prevent damage to computer.
    BAD_POOL_HEADER

a bunch of words, so didn't hand copy....then:
    Tech info
    ***STOP:0x00000019 (0x00000020,0x85E3B000, 0x85E3B118, 0x1A230000)

    Beginning Dump of Physical Memory
    Physical Memory Dump Complete

Then U had to shut computer with Switch. When I started againl, this is the window I got:
    Error Signature
    BCCode: 19 BCP1:00000020 BCP2 85E38000 BCP3 3B118
    BCP4 1A230000 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP:2_0 Product: 768_1

That's it, my friends. Hope this helps in diagosis.
(I will await comments. If I can't follow the tech details, or if I have to "play with BIOS ", maybe I should do a system restore to a dat a month ago).

Thanks in advance....to whoever takes on this "challenge "

Only thing I could find is this MSDN article for Windows 2000 (but quite sure it applies to XP too): http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/1140.asp

Suggest you do your own good idea: use system restore. And the less you play wwith the registry, the better. :D

If that doesn't help, we've got big problens. Ler us know, please.

A few of the links in regard to this error point to Driver issues.

Did you install anything new, or update drivers on anything just before these errors started?

I don't think that I installed anything new; didn't update any drivers.
I'm not sure the original discussion has anything to do with a current problem that I have or if this is something totally unrelated.

    Briefly:
    I have WinXP SP2 and IE 6 SP1.
When I click on a link in my OE e-mail, I am immediately taken to the
web-site. When on a web-site, and I click on a link within the site, it takes
"forever" to download the page....I watch the green progress bar, not much
happens. It says "done ", but I still have to wait a long time for the page to download. I click the F5 key to refresh and still it takes a long time for the page to download. (two examples are: PCPitStop, and also PCMag).
I've again checked for malware (AdAware, SpyBot, CCleaner, MS anti spyware....none), I ran a system scan for viruses (AVG and TrendMicro Housecall....no viruses), I cleaned out Temp files and cookies. Nothing helps.

Is it feasible to download IE6SP1 from Microsoft web-site and then install it over present version....or do I have to uninstall IE6 (how to do this? IE doesn't show on add/remove list in Control Panel) and then install?

princessmandi8--Not quite clear whether this slow loading is happening on all websites or just some. If some, the problem is probably with the servers at those sites, and there is little you can do about it. However, you could try disabling any popupstopper you have and see if that helps. Or, separately, you could disable the firewall, though I do not like to do that for too long a period. Reenable as soon as you reach the site.
I would suggest the following first before you do any reinstalling of IE.
The way you repair IE in WinXP is

    Jim,
    Thanks for the weekend reply.
Just about every site takes a long time to download. In fact, the link U gave me in your reply took along time to open after I clicked on it.
The Elder Geek explains his approach well, but after almost 20 years with a computer, I have never touched the registry....and don't intend to start now.
BTW, running sfc /scannow also took along time after I inserted the XP CD. Then then the Windows File Protection appeared and that took almost a half hour to complete.....but then nothing happened. Do I assume that the SFC was successful?
I have downloaded IE6 SP1 and it is sitting on my desktop. Would I be hurting anything by trying to install it??

    princessmandi8--
Usually that is the way SFC /SCANNOW works. Very unsatisfying! :)
The main thing is are things any better?
If yes, I will not have to twist your arm into entering the Registry. It really is not difficult if you have good instructions and if you back up before you make any changes. See
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/199762382617?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam
    :D

I doubt it will help or even work, but the main thing is are things any better now that you have run SFC /SCANNOW ? And if not did you try disabling your popup stopper.

    Jim,
    1. after SFC.....nothing has improved. still takes a long time to see the clicked link to a web-page.

    2. Does XP SP2 have a built-in pop-up stopper? where can I find and stop it?

    3. I notice that under your name, U say IE6 SP2. I think that I have IE6 SP1 (under Help/About I E, one sees: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 for my version

    4. Still not comfortable with the thought of getting into Registry backing up and then modifying.

    That is normal!

To confirm that SFC ran satisfactorily look in Event Viewer ....

Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Event Viewer > System. At the time you ran System File Scanner there should be two entries for Windows File Protection ... (screenshot) - SFC start and SFC finish. Anything in between may refer to files that were replaced - double click on any message to open.

Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Pop up Blocker.

You appear to have the latest version - what is the update version? (screenshot).

    Pete,
AS for the PopUp blocker.....I didn't know where it is. As U suggested, I found it; it is unchecked and I guess it has been since "day 1 ". So, I can assume tht pop-up blocking is not the culprit in my IE taking so long to download a page.

Event Viewer>system gives me the following (just copied/pasted Sept. 04 and 05....
