Is all s/w at Major Geeks safe? (i.e., do they RIGOROUSLY check for malware/adware?)

I have from time to time seen software at Major Geeks linked by the long-time regulars/experts here and elsewhere, so I have felt comfortable downloading software from the Major Geeks links they provide.

However, I'm not quite ready to make the leap of faith in Major Geeks like I have with SysInternals and Kelly's Korner. I read their claim of checking their software for malware but I just don't know how WELL they do so. Can I rest assured that they're REALLY GEEKY and know what they're doing?

One particular DL I am thinking of downloading is a VX2 removal plugin for Ad-Aware but I want to be fairly certain the software they receive is likely to be safe and not disquised well enough to fool 'em.

I don't expect anyone to give a 100% guarantee, but I would like your opinions on the safety of Major Geeks stuff in general. Looks like a lot of fun toys to experiment with there. :)

I know utilities can sometimes have bugs. Those I can accept. However, I don't want to be exposed to deliberate malice of uploaders to that site.

Also, is their freeware also ALL ad-free?

I don't have a problem with MajorGeeks - basically they are acting as a mirror for the originators of the program. I think you may assume that they are really 'geeky' - but no one's perfect :)

If you look at the link you posted you have the option of downloading it from the author - Lavasoft, if you don't trust the MajorGeeks mirror sites.
Not necessarily their freeware - as I said, they basically mirror for the authors, so no guarantees on that, I guess.

Thanks, Pete. I trust your opinion.

I guess what made me hesitate is some of the software they make easily available...like keylogger stuff. The term "keylogger" is a little too closely related to "subversive" for my comfort.
In my mind, the more geeky they are...the closer to perfect they are. :)

    Thanks again.

Mailman, I have used MajorGeeks for years and have had no problems. Just be sure you take reasonable security precautions with any software downloaded (virus scan etc.). I d/l'd the Vx2Cleaner yesterday with no problems, drop the extracted files into the Lavasoft\Plugins folder and they will show up as Add On's.

As for MajorGeek software being ad free, like an free software, you takes your chances!! :D

    Heh. OK. ;)
Thanks, John. That's very comforting to know. I feel like I can use stuff at Major Geeks with wreckless abandon now ('cept for the standard scanning protocol)...though sparrow makes me wonder... ;)

When I go on an experimentation binge, I'll be sure to create restore points often. :)
