I recently installed IE 6 SP1. I noticed that all my HTML files had an IE icon, rather than Firefox, which is my default browser. I highlighted one of the files, selected "Open With" selected Firefox, and inserted a tick in the "Always use this Application....." box.

Problem: now when I double click on an HTML file, an error box pops up, even though the file opens correctly in Firefox. See this Screen Shot: http://home.att.net/~cherokee68/filasser.jpg

In the File Types, Firefox is the application for opening an "HTML document ", and also for:
    URL:HyperTextTransfer Protocol
    URL:HyperTextTransfer Protocol with privacy
    URL:Gopher Protocol
    URL:FileTransfer Protocol

I don't know what more to do in order to get rid of the error? Any help appreciated.

Have you invoked system restore - to the point before the recent installation? If it's not too late! (= 5 days)

    In DOS:
    scanreg /restore

    sparrow and Welshjim,

Thank you both oodles for your responses to my problem. Actually you both helped me to fix the issue with file association.

I checked the htmlfile Registry Key and it pointed to Firefox as it should, and I was past the 5 days for a Registry restore. However, mention of the Registry reminded me that I had tried a new Registry cleaner, RegSeeker just a day or two after installing IE 6. I restored the Registry from the backup, and then checked the local HTML files. They had no file association, so pointed to Firefox, and all is well....

    Thanks again!

Thans for the feedback! Felt guilty bringing up such an elementary solution; know you're well ahead of most of us! But saw no one had replied for almost a day, and would have felt more guilty if it was in the short time period and not mentioned to remind you.

    sparrow,

Don't feel guilty, as your response jogged my memory (what's left of it) to take stock of anything done differently since I noted the problem. Cleaning the Registry with RegSeeker was the only change I had made since installing IE 6.

    Thanks so much!

Normally the first thing to do is go to IE tools/ internet options/ programs and uncheck "IE should check if it is default "

Then restart and go to Firefox Tools/ options/ General / default
Check the box and then click check now.

Again , restart PC once finished.

Extreme measures are warranted only if this does not work.
