I have XP Home Edition OEM Running ZA free version NAV 2005, Go Back 3 deluxe (before symantec took over), MAS , Startup monitor, Win patrol. All the latest patches from MS :)

I can access this site with Firefox but not I.E. I have tried running Ad aware-nothing. Spybot-nothing(cleaned out cookies, except about 10 I kept). Added this site to 'Trusted" still nothing.Turned off pop up blocker in I.E. Ran Ccleaner in-case index files corrupt. Flushed dns, unplugged cable modem to reset. Checked Host files, nothing of any significance. Ran NAV still nothing. Ran a Reg cleaner, nothing. I haven't been able to access this site for months. I turned off ZA, NAV, Startup monitor, Winpatrol, MAS, still nothing.

(nothing= didn't work) I don't really want to do and I.E. repair for one site.

    Any ideas?

Found a reference to Symantic Store in C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files Should I delete that?

    Alicia,

There's no need to copy & paste. Just click on the link Mike posted and it should open in a new window.

    Hmmmmm..

I only use Internet Explorer 6 and the link Mike posted is active.

With that said, do the following:
    -Delete all your cookies
-Delete all your TIF's including Offline content
    -Clear your History
-A reboot of your computer may help too. But, thats optional.

Try clicking the link after above is complete. Again, the website should open in a new window.

Can you get to http://www.symantec.com and proceed to the store from there?

I would run Sysrem File Checker - it will do no harm and may do some good ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy.

    SKI123,
I tried the things you mentioned, didn't help. Thanks anyway.

    Pete C,
I haven't ran sfc before. I did the sfc /scannow in the Run and it popped up saying it needed to check protected files are in their original version. Asks for
XP CD. I have the OEM Windows XP home edition CD. I can explore the CD etc but this file checker does not seem to know that the CD has been put in there, it keeps asking me for it!

I can get to the page you posted, but as soon as I go to the upgrade site, from that page, or page on their site for that matter, I get the same error message.

How long does it take sfc to run out of curiosity?

The CD is called XRMHOEM and is 522MB

This is pretty much par for the course :) Just click on retry each time the dialogue box pops up. See this article by Arie http://helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-24.html
    ~20 minutes.

I don't think SFC is going to solve your problem - it is more likely that a setting in IE is preventing you from reaching that page.

Try setting your IE security as detailed in How to Surf Safely , also by Arie.

My security settings are not set as high as the reference you gave me a link for. Do you thing one of those settings could still be a problem? Can that happen with only one website? What exactly is Meta Refresh? Mine is set to enable.

Can I delete references to the Symantec store located in
    C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet

    Would it wreck something?

    Hi, Alicia.

Out of curiousity, would you mind trying to access the Symantec site without your ZA firewall running? You can enable Windows Firewall while testing.

I think I used to have problems with Symantec's Store web site when I used older versions of Zone Alarm Pro. Your issue might be related to ZA.

[Edit:] Please try disabling WinPatrol's cookie filter and see what happens. Try this one before my ZA suggestion above. I think the issue I had with ZoneAlarm Pro and Symantec's Store was with 3rd party cookies.

    Definition of meta refresh here.
Don't see a problem there - I dump all my temporary internet files after each browser session - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > scroll down to Security.

I don't see a reference to dumping the TIF files in this post - normally it would be one of the first recommendations.

Mailman's suggestion re. cookies is sound - my cookie setting is Medium High - Internet Options > Privacy tab, but even with that setting I can access the URL. You might like to clear out all cookies relating to Symantec.

It's a long thread so I thought I'd recap, so you can see easily what I did. Sorry for the confusion. My head's a little foggy spinning in all this. I suppose I should clean out TIF with every attempt to get to site.

Mailman, interesting that you should point to ZA as a possible culpret. I was wondering if disabling was enough of a test. It's not working properly anyway. I might just uninstall it and do another clean install, maybe try website inbetween.

I have i386 listed in several places on HD

    Windows\servicepackfiles (410MB)

    Windows\Driver Cache (112MB)

    Windows\system32\reinstallbackups\0001\driver files (between 61 - 800KB-)

    \0002\driver\files

etc all the way to \0008\driver files
and one folder called lib (No pathway listed)

The rest of i386 files are to do with Java

Can I use any of these for sfc or should I get it off windows XP Home Edition CD?

    Pete,

That article was very informative. I copied I386 folder to C:\ and changed the source path, and tada! SFC ran like a charm. It did it's check, no message of any kind, then zipped off the screen when done.

    Thanks

Glad to hear that the workaround worked :) I think I omitted to add to my post re. sfc that " SFC exits without any closing dialogue - to see which files, if any were replaced look in Event Viewer "

I checked the event viewer and it said the windows file protection started. The next entry was that the windows file protection stopped. I assume that means there were no files replaced. :)

    Hi, Alicia J.

I think you are correct. :) If there had been issues, you would have seen other events between the Windows File Protection start event (64016) and the completion event (64017) in Event Viewer > System.

Thanks to you and PeteC, I learned something new here (again). I also copied the I386 folder to my hard drive and set the folder to be Read-Only. I appropriately edited my registry and ran a sfc /scannow scan last night on my computer without inserting my Windows XP CD. It went smoothly and reported only the two events described above.

I really enjoy reading the Windows BBS forums...helpful, friendly people with lots of tips and tricks to try. :)

THANK YOU for starting this thread.

Edit: Now, if we can get your Internet Explorer -> Symantec Store issue resolved, that would be sweet! (Sorry, I haven't been able to think of any other ideas.)
