Here's a question about buying XP. I have been looking on Amazon and noticed that the Pre-SP2 versions are much, much cheaper. Can I buy these and then download the upgrade? Or is there some other catch involved?

I also found a company that sell professional for eighty bucks, even though they are Dell Cd's?

Is there some kind of problem that I have to look out for with this?

I can't vouch for that site, but I have seen these in the past and they do not come with the product key. A major problem.

I buy mine from: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Software.jsp. Completely legal and safe. It's an OEM version which means; no fancy packaging, no tech suppot and no manual (on the CD, though). As you will see the price is not all that greater and you can rest easy with the product. This for new installs only, so if you are wanting to just upgrade (not recommended) You would have to look elsewhere.

Just my two cents. Good luck

Thanks for that site. :)

Still, on the Amazon new and used search, there are Pre-SP2 versions available, claiming to be with a registration key and for a very reasonable price. Would these be worth buying and then just downloading service pack 2?

If you have a 100% legal copy of XP SP1 on your computer you should have no problem in obtaining SP2 either by download through Windows Update or directly from here ...

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

This is the full version which will include a lot of stuff you do not need, but at least you will have a copy you can burn to CD.

Alternatively you can order a CD from MS, here ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

This is the same software you would obtain through Windows Update.
