Just installed new power supply last week after a power surge fried the PS. I am now having probs accessing various programs, IE Microsoft Excell, Word, etc., but they were fine yesterday. Any thoughts???

    Thanks...

Are you getting consistant problems? When opening IE or opening/closing a particular word/excel document. Any other problems (Memory dumps, failing to read CD drives).

With a power serge that takes out a PS you should check and test all your hardware to ensure that nothing else took a blast. Modems and Network cards are usually left unprotected has been known to blow hardware, if not blow the hardware damage it to where it functions most of the time.

Aslo check the fans, and have a close look at the motherboard, especially the capacitors ('cans'). Good chance that's damaged.

    What caused the surge?

Pull and reseat the connections. Non-power connections may have been knocked loose.

    Run Scandisk.
    Run antispyware.
    Run updated antivirus.
    Do a harddrive cleanup.
    Do a disk defrag.
I know these don't sound related, but it sounds like a drive reading or file system problem.

Thank you all... still not certain what is/was causing the problems. The computer is actually my mother's work computer (my family has a small business that is all family operated and the computers are on a small network)... when she called I told her to start by turning the system off completely and then reboot. After reboot everything appears fine, so I haven't examined anything yet. I suspected a drive or file read issue, too... and will take a look this morning at the system. I am fairly certain that there are no other internal problems, however we know how "certainty" can be with computers... lol.

The power surge was caused by some sort of vehicular accident in town that knocked a power pole down and killed the power through a large part of the town... the next day her system was completely non-responsive and the odor was unmistakable. I didn't see evidence of any other problems, though.

Thank you all for the responses... I'll let you know what happens today. I may be back with more questions!
