Hello, I am no IT guy but can do what needs to get done. We have a w2k server at work with NAV Corporate Ed on it (not deployed). It has been fine for almost 2 years. A couple of days ago NAV became disabled (as evidenced by the systray icon) and will not enable. The scheduled scans are not running. NAV updated ok (Live Update) but when trying to use windows update to see if a corrected update had been issued, the WU search function just kept searching. Previously, it had worked great.

I kind of suspect the latest Windows update but I figured that the first thing I should do is uninstall and reinstall NAV. The uninstaller would not work either (hangs) so I manually uninstalled per a tech page at Symantec (not full clean up). Now, the installer hangs upon trying to reinstall. HALP!

    Thanks, Lar

First thing I'd try since it's quick, safe, and often cures strange problems is from a start->run line, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and OK. See if the system file checker can locate and replace missing or damaged system files and get you back in business.

If not, are there any errors or warnings in your event logs that might offer more information? If you see some that might, double-click it/them open, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard, and paste them in a reply here.

HI Newt, I'll run sfc tomorrow. Which event logs are we talking about here?

    Thanks, Lar

start->run->eventvwr.msc and you will have at least System, Application, Security. Check System and Application for errors and warnings.

Hi Newt, viewers look ok. SFC came up with nothing. It ran and closed without prompting for anything. I ran the MS Malicious Software prog, Spybot and AdAware. Nothing.

Yes the uninstaller for NAV hung. While trying to reininstall it, the Symantec Packager is the prog that hangs while saying.. "preparing to install...... "

Since the orig prog used Windows Installer 2.0 and the server has 3.1, could there be some kind of conflict. Of course, I don't know if any of this has anything to do with why the program went into a permanently disabled mode.

What do you think? Thx, Lar

Not helpful I know but what I think is that the sorts of issues you are having is the reason I gave up on Norton products a while back.

This particular issue is so Norton-specific that I imagine you will need their tech folks to figure out the problem to allow you to do a reinstall. They wrote the app and they really need to support it better.

What makes this even worse is that Norton stopped supporting our version a couple of months ago!!

I am just afraid that this is one of those problems where Symantec says its Windows and MS says its Norton.
