Recently, I've reinstalled Windows 98 on this computer. The installation went well, until I noticed the color was at 16bit. A driver update upped my choiced for color to 32bit and 256. I'm at 256 right now, but I've run into a problem. all the images in Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer are noisy, grainy if you will. I attempted to use the driver available to me, for my video card (ATI RADEON 7000), but it asked me for the hardware for my plug-and-play monitor, which I don't believe I own. (The owner of the computer doesn't believe he has it either) Thus we didn't get anywhere with the driver disk.

How do I get back the clear images from before the reinstall? I'm thoroughly stumped.

    Hi napalmtheory,

    Welcome to WindowsBBS!

1st: Locate or download & install the latest driver for your monitor.
2nd: Locate or download & install the latest driver for your ATI Radeon 7000 video card.

    Any questions?
    Please post back.

Definitely update monitor and adapter but...
Also keep in mind that if this was a clean install your back to using the older versions of IE and directx. As I remember the icons, color and crispness of IE changed with updating. While this may not be the case of any gifs, jpgs or images you may be seeing on net pages there will be an apparent difference in IE's displaying of it's own, when updated. Just thought I'd mention this in case you where also noticing the differences between versions.

Your problem is actually the color depth you have chosen. It can be confusing but 32bit (true color) is a much higher color depth than 256. 256 is exactly that, 256 colors. 32 bit is millions of colors.
