2 weels ago NS and NS Mail loaded showing only the frame of the screen.
I have tried everything I could think of since then, and today NS would not
load at all. I use NS 99.99% of the time and am lost without it.
I ran all my spyware programs. Any suggestions??

Just yesterday, I tried to get NS6.2.3 going, as someone had questions about it. I was using a previous used profile, but the results were strange at best. I could see all the toolbars, but nothing in the middle, and when I say nothing, I mean that. I could see the desktop. I gave after a couple of tries. When all fails, I create a new profile.
My answer is, that it will do it. And, nothing should be lost. Just look at Ramona's Netscape Solutions , especially the Profile part.

Westside Thanks for the quick reply. At least you got tool bars and could see desktop. Around that time I reloaded Net2Phone and though that had something to do with it. I'll wait for a few more answers before doing what you suggest. Joe R.

As I keep thinking:----IE6 and Outlook Express work OK. the problem must be with NS. I looked at Ramona's solutions, but didn't know which one to use.
I think I have my profiles backed up in 2 or 3 places-USB flash mem.

Any way I can determine the problem??--Would a quick cure be to
    just re-install NS7.0 as I have a CD??

    joeskys,

Exit Netscape, and open Windows Explorer
Rename your Mail folder to XMail
    Rename your ImapMail to XImapMail
When the Mail window comes up, are you able view the "whole thing "?

Let us know, and then we can go from here.

    Joe,

Your Netscape 7.0 Mail and ImapMail folders are located here:

    Windows 2000/Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

    Windows 95/98/ME
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

Netscape Communicator 4.xx Profiles are located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users

If you have no Webmail Accounts then you won't have an ImapMail folder.

    Joe,

What OS is on your PC? When you say you couldn't Scandisk, what exactly happened when you tried?

    Joe,

I didn't abandon you, but had to take time out to watch Rock Star:INXS

I believe your problem with Windows had better be worked out before we start on Netscape. Post your inability to use Scandisk in the Windows XP Forum, and the experts there will be able to help diagnose your problem.

Yesterday, I came up with several items after doing a search. I have a good one from annoyances.org , and there are many more.

Ramona: I can run Defrag to completion. It's scandisk that will not run.

Westside: Thanks for the link. I book marked it. It pertains to "98 "- I have
XP Home, but will try it later on today.
    Thanks All, Joe R

    Joe,

Do you get an error when you try to Scandisk, or does Scandisk keep starting over?

I have found all sorts of information on unable to scandisk in Windows XP. Suggestions have a rather wide reach. Everything from, install Service Pack 2, to running Scandisk in safe mode. I also saw a problem with version 6.0.631.002 of ZA and Scandisk, but you no doubt use the XP Firewall.

Do you disable all running programs before Scandisk and Defrag? I mean everything but system tray and explorer?

I run 98SE, and I have the problem of Scandisk restarting, so I scandisk in DOS, unfortunately you can't do that in XP. I would still check over in the XP section about this problem.

Did you uninstall the Net2Phone to see if it is the problem?

Have you tried a new Profile? Create a new Profile and set up your Mail Account, and see if your Mail window is viewable in the new Profile.

Since your problem is in your Profile, I don't believe reinstalling Netscape will correct your Mail startup problems.

For anybody's use, the Zone 6.0 build is , definitely, a dud. Just go to their newsgroup, and find out.

Ramona:As of today, NS will load but only the frame, no tool bars or anything
else. NS mail will not do anything, :( not even try to load.

NS.com will however load using IE 6. I have spent the last 3 hours on Norton
NIS, thinking that maybe I blocked it inadvertently. I have a sneaky feeling
some file in NS got corrupted-just a guess.

No error when I try to run Scandisk, just says that it will run on next restart, but it doesn't. I,ll try your suggestion after lunch.

I use Norton Internet Security and also XP Firewall.

    Later, Joe R

    Joe,
try to disable Norton. You can try all of it, and work your way back, or any way you want. To me, Norton IS or just plain AV is a certified troublemaker.
As for the Netscape.com loading in IE, it is no surprise. There is a web page, a browser and a mail client. The same is true of the Microsoft programs. You should be able to get msn.com anywhere. But, you have something putting a whammy on your browser and your mail.

Since the last post, I have been trying everything I could of.:
Completely disabled NIC,ICF and searched thru MS KB all afternoon.
Finally I called my ISP and he told me something was bad in NS 7,
which I expected, as everything works OK with IE 6 and Outlook Express
which I do not like. If anyone has another suggestion, please post it.
If not, I'm going to install NS 7.0 from a CD that I have.

If I install another NS 7.0, should I install to another folder or uninstall
from ADD/REMOVE or from Netscape uninstall??

I have my Profiles saved in a USB Thumb Drive (or what ever you call them).

Would love to hear from you-all. Thanks, Joe R.

    Joe,

Don't install 7.0 again as that version is obsolete. If you want to stay with a suite, including Mail & Composer, instead install Mozilla 1.7.11. It will be familiar to you, as it is like Netscape, only without AIM and the ability to access AOL Webmail thru the Mail & Newsgroups component. There will be no learning curve.

First: Open the Netscape Profile Manager and Create a new Profile
Don't do anything more, just the new Profile Name

Next: Uninstall Netscape 7.0 using Add/Remove
    REBOOT YOUR PC

Now install Mozilla 1.7.11, and point it to the new Profile
When the Mail Wizard opens, set up your Mail Accounts

    Next: close Mozilla
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the new Mail Account folder, and open it

Navigate to the old Mail Account folder, and open it
Rename the files WITHOUT MSF EXTENSIONS, e.g., OLDInbox, OLDTemplates, OLDSent, etc.
Now copy the renamed files from the OLD Mail Account folder, to the new Mail Account folder.

Now open your Mail, and all should be viewable. You can copy the Mail from the OLDInbox, to your new Inbox file, or leave it as it is for an archive.

From the old Profile, also copy these files:
abook.mab (Address Book) (Note: Export abook.mab as an LDIF File as an added precaution.)
    history.mab (Collected Addresses)
    bookmarks.html
    cert7.db (Security Certificates)
    cookies.txt
    cookperm.txt (cookie and image permissions)
    custom.dic (Dictionary)
key3.db (Key Database - Certificates, Passwords, etc.)
panels.rdf (Panel displayed in the Sidebar)
    persdict.dat (Mozilla Dictionary)
search.rdf (Search Plugins in the Sidebar)
    training.dat (Junk Mail training data)
user.js (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
usercontent.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
userchrome.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)

I would also suggest copying the Plugins folder, although it may be necessary to reinstall some programs.

Do NOT copy these files to the new Profile:
    Cache Folder
    chrome/*.jar file
    downloads.rdf file
    localstore.rdf file
    prefs.js file
    XUL.mfl file

    Passwords:
randomcharacters.s (password data, and will be similar to: 79673512.s)

Open Mozilla and access a site which requires a password. This will establish a new password file (randomcharacters.s). Close Mozilla.

Paste the password data file from the old Profile into the new profile, then rename the new password file, e.g., Xrandomcharacters.s. Mozilla will not use the old password file.

Follow the same procedure for randomcharacters.w (Fill Form Data)

By doing the manual copy and paste rather than the export/import, you will avoid moving any corrupt files from the old Profile.
