    Same Problem Here

I just upgraded to NIS 2005 last week and since then, the same thing is happening: OE Identity Login Screen randomly appears out of nowhere. It happens 3 or 4 or more times per day. Very annoying. I checked with my brother, who upgraded to NIS 2005 earlier in the year - and he said he had the same problem.... after searching everywhere on the net for info, he finally found something (he thinks it was buried on Symantec's or Microsoft's site?) that told him how to solve the problem. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the "printout/instructions for fixing" anymore and doesn't remember exactly what he did.... but he thought it had something to do with instant messenger scanning being turned on (he thought there might be some tie-in when NIS or NAV tried to scan/protect/monitor an instant messenger program (MSN's perhaps?), the signal Norton was sending may activate the OE login screen?). Does this make any sense to anyone? I agree that this is very frustrating and I have looked all over the net for help (that's how I found this forum). Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Solution

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. Turn off NAS. Since I have done both of these, things seem to be okay. Just watch and make sure that Auto-protect is on.

The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
    attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
    that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
    the most recent virus definitions."

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
    saved to your hard drive."
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
    definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

Status on Symantec's response to this problem.

It's now been one month since I opened a problem 'ticket' with Symantec Technical Support on the Identity Login launching problem. I have heard from them every 1 to 2 days with a suggestion on how to fix the problem, and none of their suggestions have worked.

The latest response I received was the first which implied they are now taking this issue to the 'troubleshooting' status, as they asked me to begin disabling parts of NIS to see if the problem persists.

I'll post a status here next month or when the problem is solved - whichever occurs first.
