I would like to try one of these but don't know if I'm knowledgeable enough to make the necessary settings. First I'm probably a normal computer user but I do alot of backing up of my dvds and cds which means alot of burning which I thought might make using the Diskeeper 9 on a regular schedule more important. I'm using XP Pro with a 120 gig harddrive and 98SE with a 40gig harddrive although I rarely use the latter. Some Questions:

    1. Which do you recommend for me, the Home or Pro version?

    2. I have read the online manual but still not sure what settings I need to make after down loading. Can someone list what I should check or do and in what order so I can just set it and forget about it and let it do it's thing?

    3. Have often should you defrag, it seems the writers of the software think daily?

    4. Do you think it is possible that if I buy the Home or Pro version that there would ever be an update for Microsofts newer OS coming out in the future?

    5. Does this take up alot of memory running in the background?

    6. Any cheaper places to download this software than from their website?
    Thanks!

    You must decide that ....

    from http://www.diskeeper-home.co.uk/

Unless you are a Power user the Home edition is the one for you.
Basically just 'Set it and Forget it'
Set it and Forget defrags when necessary - which will depend on the amount of usage the computer gets. My main disks (I have the Pro version) get defragged ~every 2 days on SI & FI
Very definitely - those guys wrote the defragger built into XP.
    No
Search the web - try Amazon, etc.

You can try Diskeeper by downloading the free version Diskeeper Lite. Only does a manual defrag - no automation.

Or download a trial of Pro or Home

Okay thanks for the info! What is exactly a power user though, someone who has alot of different programs running on his computer (I do) and make defragging to the fullest a priorty, or someone who knows how to tweek the software (not really) and changes alot of the default settings to get the most out of it?

Since I don't really understand the extra options the PRO version has over the Home version and their importance, maybe the latter would work just as well for me. Then again since both have the Set It and Forget It feature maybe I don't have to understand the difference and just pick either version as long as I don't have to do much to set them up.

I think you will find that a Power User either plays a lot of high power, top end games requiring a lot of processing power and disk space or maybe does a lot of video editing. Simply running a lot of programs does not, IMHO, make you a Power User - after all you are probably not using more than two or three simultaneously.

Incidentally if you are running NTFS formatted disks the effect of fragmentation is less than that on FAT32 disks.

From what you have posted I think the Home version would suit you fine - just Set it and Forget It - and forget it :D

If you are running XP Home, Diskeeper 9 regular will do just fine. There is no need to pop for Diskkeeper Pro. The slick thing about Diskeeper is that you can use your computer while it is defragmenting. If you can find a copy of Diskeeper 8, that would be sufficient.

It takes a few minutes to defrag the first time. But after that, it'll defrag huge drives in less than 2 minutes.

Actually I'm running XP Pro and running NTFS formatted disc. I had emailed Execsoft awhile back asking pretty much the same questions as here but since they took longer than I wanted to wait to respond I posted here. Then yesterday I finally got this email:

    Dear Mike,

Thank you for your email inquiry.

I recommend DK 9 Pro for you for the following reasons: it includes boot time defrag and defragments multiple drives at once - unlike DK 9 Home. It allows custom configuration tailored to the way you use your system. It includes FragShield which prevents critical system areas from becoming fragmented, eliminating a major cause of crashes, freezes and lock-ups. Fragmentation of the MFT (Master File Table, your disk’s virtual table of contents) and paging file (disk-based extension of memory) causes crashes, freezes and lock-ups. DK 9 Pro's boot-time mode can be used to safely defragment certain system files (including the MFT in Windows 2000 and NT and the paging file in XP, 2000 and NT). These normally cannot be safely defragmented while the computer is up and running but they can be with Diskeeper 9 Pro boot-time mode.

Since you guys think the Home version is all I need I guess they just wanted to sell me the more expensive thing. By the way I downloaded the Home trial version and it seems to be very easy to use so I will probably buy it.

It's true that Diskeeper Pro contains all the bells and whistles mentioned and, since I run the Pro version, I use them. However prior to upgrading to Pro I was very happy with the Home version and I still believe that that will be more than satisfactory for you - but if the price difference is not significant go for Pro.

No I'm convinced now the home version will be adequate for me.

My trial of Diskeeper Home is about up and I like it, so as I'm going through the buy process it asked if you wanted a one year "Maintenance" for $7.50 more, do I want this? I figured you would automatically get updates for a year like most software but evidently not, is this is a type of program that rarely needs them?

On a side note, I'm using "Set It and Forget It" and "Smart Scheduling" and it seems to be defragging everyday, is this normal?

Could find no reference to that on the UK site - any side notes to explain what that is? Sometimes this means that you can download the program again any time within a given time span - your 'normal' download link generally expires after a few days.
Yes - the frequency will depend on how much you use the computer.

Well when I go to www.consumerdiskeeper.com and click on Diskeeper Home addition "Add To Cart" and it goes to next page. Add 1 year Maintenance for 7.49...Details: Product maintenance entitles you to full version upgrades for twelve months. If a new version of your purchased product is released during the maintenance period, you'll receive that new version at no additional charge.

    If link doesn't work it's at diskeeper.com I went.

Okay. I was just trying to determine whether it was necessary to spend the extra money or not.

Not necessarily - if the program works fine now it should continue to do so. Upgrades are not always necessary and the new features/benefits they offer may not be of importance to you. Plenty of folk still using Win 98 :D
