A co-worker has a file folder on her PC that contains MANY Word docs. She is wondering if she can get all the filenames of those docs and place them in a spreadsheet column.

Is it possible to do this? Or at least in some other format where the filenames could be put into a table.

    thanks!

HOW TO: Add a "Print Directory" Feature for Folders in Windows XP

    SUMMARY
This article describes how to add a "print directory" feature for folders in Windows XP. After you follow the steps in this article, you can right-click a folder, and then click Print Directory Listing to print a directory listing of the folder's contents.

Interesting, Steve - I was not aware of that :( I have always used Karen's Directory Printer - will give the MS offering a try.

Not overly impressed with the MS method - the print out is not as clear as Karen's and there is no way of specifying how much/little to print. JMO

Karen's Directory Printer will Save to Disk - this would suit your co-workers requirement better I think as the file names can be pasted into a spreadsheet, which would save a lot of typing from a print out.

Or just open a command window ( "DOS window ") by going to -->
    Start/Run
    type in CMD
navigate to the directory you want and
use DIR and a redirection symbol (>) to send dir output to a text file

Open the text file and copy/paste contents into Excel

    example for plain directory: DIR/B>MyDirectory.txt
for other flavors of directory format, type DIR/?

For the long and boring description see ->
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dir.mspx

    good luck
