I am new to XPSP2. In Win98, if I was having a problem with IE, I went to Control Panel, and Add/Remove programs, and then hi-lighted IE6, clicked Remove button and then selected Repair.
    (I am presently using IE6 SP1)
Question 1: How can I do this with XP?
Question 2: I seem to be having a problem with OE. When I send an e-mail with several GIFs embedded in the e-mail, it is sent in "pieces ", not an entire e-mail. Has a setting in OE changed? or how do I get back to the original way of sending the e-mail in "one-piece "?
Question 3: If I am on a web-page and wish to send it, I go to File/Send/Web-page and then hit Send. The recipient gets a "bunch" of numbers and can't make any sense out of the e-mail he receives. Yet, if I go to File/Send/Link and then hit Send, the recipient get a shortcut link and he can click on it and view the web-page. What has happened....I used to send web-pages with no problem.
    Question 4: Using Win 98, I had a readily-available link to Favorites.
Where can I find this readily-available link in XP (without having to click on my IE icon and then clicking Favorites?

Perhaps this thread should have been separate threads???

Not as straightforward as in Win 98 .....

How to Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer in Windows XP
Tools > Accounts - highlight account > Properties > Advanced - is 'Break apart messages larger than ...' checked? By default it is not.
Don't know offhand, but a Repair of IE might fix it.
Right click on the Taskbar > Properties > Start Menu > Customise and check Favourites (I run XP in Classic mode, but the same should hold for the XP theme.)

    1) Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. Have the WinXP CD ready. You likely will be asked to insert it.
    More details here
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-03.html
    2) OE Tools|Accounts|highlight the account|Properties|Advanced tab|Sending section. I suspect you have set "Break apart messages..." to a finite number. Just uncheck the box|Apply|OK.
    3) Have no idea. Maybe that will be fixed by 1)
    4) Not sure I understand the question. Are you saying that "Favorites" does not appear in the IE Menu bar (just below the title bar)? Or that Favorites does not appear in the Toolbars (below the MenuBar)? Or in neither place? For the latter, in a IE window, right click a blank spot on the Toolbar|Customize. You should be able to move Favorites from the left panel to the right, but highlighting and clicking "Add ". That should put "Favorites in the Toolbar. Or maybe I misunderstand just where you had (and want to put) a "readily-available link " to Favorites. There are many options. Like right click a blank spot On the Taskbar (near the clock)|Properties|Start Menu tab|Customize|Advanced. There is an option to put Favorites into your Start button menu.
EDIT--PeteC--I type slower, but otherwise "Great minds think alike" :)

    Pete and Welshjim,
    Your responses:
Question 1: your link applies to:
How to Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer in Windows XP
    APPLIES TO
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows XP SP1
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows XP
    Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0
    will try SFC per Welshjim

Question 2: Right On….I’ve unchecked the 'Break apart messages larger than ...' (it was checked….don’t recall ever checking it. So, for now, I shall assume this fixes my problem).
Question 4: Your suggestion did the job: Taskbar > Properties > Start Menu > Customize

This leaves me with Question 1 to be "fixedâ€. I will try SFC and will post a followup to this thread.
    So, again, thanks guys.

    Hey guys,
    Using DogPile, I found this:
How do I repair Internet Explorer in Windows® XP?
    Revised - 03/03/2002

The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4.

However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

You will need to have your XP CD available.

Some people have problems with the command line above. A small VB Script that will execute the command for you can be downloaded here. Save the file to your hard drive and double click it to run IE Setup.

I was wondering whether I ought to try this.

The link given at the beginning of this thread didn't help. I tried Run, then CMD and tried sfc /scannow and I couldn't accomplish what I needed to repair IE.

    princessmandi8--
Are you saying that the SFC /SCANNOW idea that both PeteC and I have suggested did not work? This is the standard way to find and replace all corrupt or outdated Windows system files (including IE). And I just Start|Run|sfc /scannow (note space in front of /)--no need for "cmd ".
Try that. And if it does not work, what happens? (You say "I couldn't accomplish what I needed to repair IE ". Please provide more detail.)
Yes--using ie.inf is another way. I believe it is more specific to IE.
This article lists almost all the ways that I know and provides a little more background

    Welshjim,
    1) I did Starft/Run and typed in sfc /scannow and then OK;and all that happened is a quick "black screen "...less than a second and back to previous screen.

    2) BAck to my original question 2, where I thought that OE was corrupted and that is why I was considering a repair. U guys gave me some advice about breaking apart messages......
I’ve unchecked the 'Break apart messages larger than ...' (it was checked….don’t recall ever checking it. Your suggestions have solved my problem.....OE works perfectly now that messages are no longer broken apart.

I will now abandon the thought about repairing IE.
We can now close this thread????

sfc /scannow followed by black screen.

That is weird. I found one reference on Google to that problem, but no solution. There is a possible fix to a " somewhat similar" problem here.
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21462106.html
What happens if you run other commands from Start|Run like msconfig or msinfo32? (Don't worry, they will not cause you problems. You can just close the windows that open, if any.)
Did you try your ie.inf idea?
I understand that you do not have an IE problem at present, but were asking how to repair it when necessary.
Since the standard WinXP procedure (sfc /scannow) does not work on your PC, you have found a problem you did not know you had. And it could cause you big problems in the future. You will have no way to Repair XP when you really need it. Plus you do have the #3 problem.
How long have you had WinXP? If only recently, it might be a good idea to nip these problems in the bud.
I will give you my ideas, but maybe someone else will have a better idea. So hold on.
I would suggest a System Restore to a date a week ago. If that does not help, try two weeks ago, etc.
If you find a date when your problems are cured, great!
Sadly, you will have to then reinstall any programs, updates (including Windows Update), etc. you installed after the day of the Restore.
If you go back to the date you installed WinXP without success, you may have to consider whether a reinstall of WinXP is the best course. That will probably wipe all your personal data and installed programs out. (But perhaps better now than later when you will have a lot more on your hard drive.)
Can you back that personal data up before taking that course of action? That will allow you to restore the personal data much easier. But you will still need to install programs, etc.
Of course, it is up to you if you want to go the whole nine yards. Maybe I am overreacting. (And note from the System Restore window that you can restore System Restore to today, if you would rather take get back to today and just hope you never have to use sfc /scannow in the future.)

    Welshjim,
Thanks for this detailed response. I will address your comments:

What happens if you run other commands from Start|Run like msconfig or msinfo32?I have no problem with msconfig or msinfo32.
I again tried: sfc /scannow and had inserted the WinXP CD; and got a momentary black screen and then back to where I was. I took a minute or two and I got a window: "Windows File Protection Window" and it says: "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected windows files are intact and in their original versionsâ€.
After a long while this windows disappears…..and I assume that all is OK !!

How long have you had WinXP? I have XP for about 6 months

Plus you do have the #3 problem: No longer a problem.. Not allowing OE to break messages apart, now allows me to send a web-page intact.

System Restore : For now, I think that I will hold off on using System Restore.

BTW, I was using Win98SE B 4 getting a new machine. Did U know that 98 also has the capability of using System Restore? If interested, I can send U the details.

Thanks for taking the time to "set me on the good pathâ€. Will get familiar with XP in due time.

princessmandi8--Still a bit of a mystery why you get the black screen and have to wait several minutes, but it seems that other than that, sfc /scannow is working OK. As you have seen, after a fairly long wait for it to do its job (showing a progress meter), the window just closes and the job is done.
I agree, no need for further action at this point. However do not forget your normal maintenance such as ScanDisk and deleting Temporary Internet Files. Post back if you need instructions. You can also run Defragmenter, but this usually is needed much less frequently with the big modern hard drives than it was in the days of Win98.
P.S. Win98 has no System Restore. It does, however have Scanreg /Restore. Start|ShutDown|Restart in MS-DOS mode|Enter|wait for Reboot|type scanreg /restore|Enter|Choose a date before problem started|Enter|Wait|Reboot. The only catch is you will usually be offered only up to five days in the past. So not too helpful for long standing problems.
P.P.S. I wonder if sfc /scannow will work more quickly now that you have run it and replaced any corrupt/outdated files. :)

I do run ScanDisk and I do have instructions for doing this. For other visitors to the BBS, I will post the instructions that I have for ScanDisk:

    ScanDisk For XP:

    • Click on My Computer icon

    • Hi-light C:\ drive

    • Click File on top row of menu items

    • Click Properties on drop-down menu

    • Click Tools TAB

    • Click Error Checking and "check now ".

    • Need to restart Computer and it will automatically run Check Now when re-started.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    As for 98 Scanreg /restore:
If U want, U can increase the "restore point" from 3 up to 15 if U wish. I think that I can describe it here:

If U have only 3 backup registries, then U will need to do the following
    and then repeat above:
    1. Use Windows Explorer (start/programs/Windows Explorer..or hold down the
WinKey and hit the E key on keyboard)
    2. On left side of screen scroll down to C:\ and click on the + sign at
    left
    3. Scroll down to Windows and click on the + sign at left
    4. Scroll down to Sysbackup and click it. On right side of screen scroll
down the icons and click on Scanreg.ini
    5. Scroll down to Max Backup Copies and change the value to 14 and then
    hit SAVE.

U probably don't need this, but I thought it might be helpful to others.

princessmandi8--I am sure those will be helpful instructions for many.
There actually is a perhaps faster way to run ScanDisk (in WinXP, it is called CheckDisk).
Start|Run|type chkdsk /f|OK. That will produce a PC-DOS screen which will offer to run CheckDisk at next boot, just as your instructions will. In this case, you type Y|Enter.

    Thanks for the tip.
Next time that I have an occasion to do ScanDisk, I shall try Chkdsk
