Im working with several different concepts of organizing things. Documents,Files,Editing of Files,Pictures. Pre-Proof Documents of wich I need to keep tabs of wich use photographs. Im trying to use a database from MS Works then, for one of the ideas wich includes keeping Icons Ive created myself as an easily accesible set of record. Search, look at,find etc - without using the Windows Explorer. This just one example idea of using Dbase for pictures. You could actually organize your photo collections within a Dbase with coordinated data fields, for each record of your photos.

    Microsoft Works DataBase.

Each record can create a 'field of information. Each record is different. With mostly the same 'fields of information. But I find that using Microsoft Works. The only way to have each record to be unique of its own picture/photo/icon...well I haven't found a 'way ?

This is the question, while using Microsoft Works Database, the only control I can find to enter a picture/photo etc, from a known file is to do so using the View Design Form.

With View-Design Form ...you are actually placing a picture for the entire database of each and every record. So that switching to one record, you see the same photo . Since this is 'View-Design Form.

    View Form
I tried for example, dragging a set of 48x48 pixel icon .bmps onto the record field information to see if in fact this capability is within the program.

I can't find anywhere in the sparce help for Microsoft Works,or be able to specify entry of 'single record, single picture.

[ ](1. Is there a way to enter a specific picture for each unique record in the Microsoft Dbase.? Where do I find the controls/commands/menus to do this, and what are they ?

[ ](2. Can anybody tell me of a different Dbase program - that is not too expensive wich will do this. One record, one photo,or even several. But ability to enter visual files for each unique record. Then look through the Dbase with the correct editing of 'form to do so ?
    - I have a W98 version of Lotus SmartSuite wich can do this. But Im working in XP now. So that is somewhat self explanatory. Also I would not like a DBase wich is heavy laden 'internet based .xml/website type programs.

[ ](3.Maybe somebody can tell me the experience they have with their Dbase program. How it handles pictures,.bmps, graphics, objects for the unique singular record that the DBase composes.

My initial reaction is that you are trying to use the Works database to do things it is not capable of doing. Works database is a very basic data base which works well for text records, but is not designed to do much else.

I am not at all sure that it is even a cut down version of Access which might serve your purpose, but I have no idea how it might handle the insertion of image files.
Yes - and there are many such programs out there which will do just that. Those that immediately come to mind are Photoshop Album, Adobe Bridge which is part of Adobe CS2 - and part of Photoshop CS2, ACDSee, etc,

Cabin Fever. Takes All Kinds. Hi PeteC.

Hi PeteC. The 'Add Fields has(Works Version 6):
    General
    Number
    Date
    Time
    Text
    Fraction
    Serialized

Wouldn't seem such a difficult thing to have something as a 'graphic field. With several subset aspects to the fields entry. For each a unique record.

    ________
The problem is that things are not linearly separated via 'photos, and text.

In many cases,a dbase would be needed to complete a large contextual document. Before proofing,in order to access and then put it together.

    That is one typical concept.

Another is like I had wanted to do,for my machine build, was for example the created Icons I had made:

    48x48pxlOrange
    48x48pxlLime
    48x48pxlPink
With the fields of information detailing example drive location, location stored, when created, program created with.

You know there is a lot of scenarios to utilize.A database is used for 'music collections.Somehow manage to set a graphic in them.

Another example,I am surveying some property. Each trip I take.A selectively specific location on the property will have a certain feature. Each grid section will be a picture with its information. It cant be done in one trip. Hence its informational use for/from a database.

Think a geologist for example. Finds samples in a specific location with statistics. And pictures of the specimens/finds.

Must be a database wich has this type of field description for each unique record.

Static text seems archaic with modern day computer capabilities.Or matching math totaling etc.

Thanks for your reply.Hi ya PeteC." " Attempting to do something Works isn't capable of" "..I'll take that as an incapability of Works database.

Maybe IBM will come out with a new version of SmartSuite for XP. Maybe. Heard there was some kind of controversy over the 'picture field. In a database. The SmartSuite I have seems somewhat outdated.'Aproach has a 'Picture Field. Of course you see the 'tm..there. yada, yada. Xp here is running in 32 bit color.

Seems like a no brainer to me.Got things I can do with my own cabin fever here.Really in need of something more linear than text.Qualifying information rather than 'quantifying it.

Sideline....got XP Home dual booted on here. Hi Newt.

There's been a version around for years - Millenium Edition - runs on XP (I use Lotus Organiser from that suite) and available here at a knockdown price or here depending on which Border you are North of :)

    Lol

Yeah. Hows the Suite run on your XP machine ? I like that PIM too. Colors are awesome.

    __________ off topic:

Im wondering where Lotus will put the dot next . If version Ten comes out soon.

I have a verson 9.,something or another. It will install on XP . Maybe I will try it.

You know,at my local store one time I asked for the SmartSuite. To be ordered from IBM . They would do it. And it would cost me 399.00 list. I think that the suite comes with its own book .

Like the color handling in the spreadsheet. But find that the instruction available from the PDFs become less useful when details in precision are necesary. If you were to try to search the Internet for a book on SmartSuite you might find one or two 'used books. Divisions' in the word processor is a winner too.

Use to be the university here was doing SmartSuite. Been to their software store in past couple years, and they are doing straight Microsoft.Couple of shelfs .

Dislike the hit and miss with software instructions. Cool idea would be to put up a website that users using software could go for instruction after they purchased the software.

( kind of off topic )

No in this case north is really that far north.. I'll see what the version I have does for me. Know that in w98SE it required some serious updates. Maybe not available any longer from Lotus. Another world that way. Screen metrics always seemed to be out of sink. Sometimes gives me the BOD. But I still use it.

Thanks for replies PeteC. I live in Anchorage . Havent considered reason Mexico is considered bordering anything but dinner around here.

I have a distinct feeling that Lotus Smartsuite died a long time ago - or was absorbed into Corel.

Seems to me that what you require is very specialised piece of software which may not be available 'off the shelf'.

BTW - When we refer to 'North of the Border' this side of the pond we mean Scotland :)

    Im done.

If specialized is a no brainer Im all hats.

When a single line of code could present such a 'context of things. Such as that with the 'graphic field'' in a 'record of a 'dbase .

I dont do any programming. Im not all zingers about text editing. Had it up to here with 'specialized'' software. Chacing the dot just to find the trail is filled with them.

    Lol....things can only get better.

Now if I could do that. And not get my money back. I would be a happy camper.Well I think Im done here.

Maybe somebody could chime in on some programs that do this. Seems like such a room full of toys. I had a friend of mine leave me stranded on a dessert roadway one time. For some reason we had stopped and left the auto. He was a joker . And each time I scurried up to the auto (its 125 degrees ya know) he just stepped on the accelerator. This went on for about 30 minutes or so.

Well Im doing my own referencing . But I get that accelerated feeling evertime Im thinkin, and cant show for it.

You have a good day now.
