OK - you worried me somewhat when you said you had no av running.

I must admit that I find your problem most perplexing - I'll continue to think on it :)

A couple more questions following a root through the manual ....

You are trying to install the software when logged on with Administrative rights? - and

You are installing the software/drivers with the printer disconnected from the PC?

Google displays a boatload of issues when 1607: Unable to install InstallShield scripting runtime is searched. The only one I found specific to your printer I posted earlier. Many of the problems involve re-installing MS's installer and other solutions.

I am the only user of this PC and I assume I am always logged in as Admin. How can I check this?

I have tried to install many different ways, with the printer disconnected and with it connected. the results are the same. The first time I followed the instructions exactly as to when to connect the printer. The Driver is installed, just the software will not.

    I found one article at Microsoft site, ID # 888019 titled;

You may receive a "1607:Unable to install InstallShield Scripting runtime" error message when you try to install software in Windows XP

I tried to follow the instructions under 'Reinstall the InstallScript engine' but I do not have a folder in C:\Program Files called InstallShield. I do have one called InstallShield Installation Information. I did find C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield but there is no file in it called Developer so I could not proceed.

Not necessarily - depends on how the computer was set up when XP was loaded. You can check ....

Control Panel > User Accounts - there is a list of Users there - check under your user name.

I should point out that I had no problem installing AVG Free which I did a little while ago.

Under my name it says 'Computer Administrator, Password protected'.

Then the box to the right says 'Administrator, Computer Administrator, Password Protected'.

    Guest account is off.

So that's not the problem. Incidentally I don't have the Installshield folder either, just the one you mentioned. I fancy Windows Installer 3.1 which was an update not so long ago may have changed things.

    No further forward :(

I'm moving this thread to the Software forum.

Finally! Some semblance of an answer!

I've had the exact same problem described in this thread, which is what brought me here in the first place. Brother was nice enough to send me their as yet unreleased new version of the drivers and editor, but that hasn't solved the problem.

After scouring the web for clues, I've found what appear to be some definitive answers. The problem seems to be tied to an interaction between InstallShield and SP2. One of the DLL used by InstallShield has an uninitialized variable that in SP1 is set to zero, but in SP2 is given an apparently random value. The InstallFinalize action returns a value tied to that number. If that number causes InstallFinalize to return a value of two, it triggers a cancel code path, i.e. the application believes the user has cancelled the installation. Consequently, InstallShield proceeds to undo the installation and erases all relevent files.

This explains why it is a rather rare problem: only those of us unlucky enough to have been blessed with the "bad" value upon SP2 installation will see this problem manifest - otherwise it would be happening to everyone and there would certainly be a lot more documentation on it. More information can be found in this discussion: http://forums.relicnews.com/archive/index.php/t-36160.html Same problem, just a different application (although I have run into a couple more instances of this problem cropping up specifically with the P-Touch application).

The fix offered in the discussion is pretty hairy. I would suggest backing everything up and uninstalling SP2. That should solve the problem (as if that's a "solution "). Apparently reinstalling SP2 is not out of the question, since the naughty variable will presumably be set to another random value and the likelihood is that it won't be the same one that caused the problem in the first place. I have yet to try it out due to time constraints, but I'll pass along any successes.

    Thanks, His Tomness

I may try uninstalling SP2 to see if it will work. Brother also sent me their latest software and it installed and then uninstalled as well. The driver installs every time and stays put.

For anyone having this problem with the Brother Label Printer, I did find a print program that works. It is called 'DelMar Envelopes Easy', it is free to try for 30 days and only costs $5.00 if I want to keep it. It works great for address labels. It can be found with a Google search.

PeteC, Since this is obviously a Windows problem, I would like to see this thread moved back to WinXP forum. I believe it would get more exposure.

I hope someone finds a simple fix for this problem.

I am unable to uninstall SP2 as it does not appear in the ADD/REMOVE list, so I cannot see if this would work.

I hope someone comes up with a way to fix the problem.

Daniel - take a look at the attached picture for how to remove the SP.

    Thanks, Newt

I may give it a try when I have some extra time.

Here is what I did today.

I created a Ghost backup of my drive 'C' and then uninstalled SP2. I then installed the Brother P-Touch Editor 4.1 and it installed without a problem. After that I reinstalled SP2.

Everything seemed to be okay at that point. I tried to install the P-Touch Editor 4.2 and it suggested I uninstall the previous version. When I tried to uninstall 4.1 it would not uninstall even though it went through the motions as if it was uninstalling and I tried it twice. So, I tried to install 4.2 anyway and it installed and uninstalled as it was doing previously.

I did use the P-Touch Editor 4.1, but it is not as easy to use as the DelMar program that I was using. After a while and some other issues showed up in my OS that I did not like, I decided to go back where I was and restored back to the Ghost image that I had made.

I think I will just buy the DelMar for the $5.00 and stick with that until this problem is solved.

Thanks to all of you for your efforts to solve this.
