The audio device has been somehow deleted from my XP operating system, or at least under volume control it says: 'No Audio Device', and all options are grayed our. The icon on the taks is gone.

I recently used wifi to connect (not presently) Could that have deleted/disabled the XP sound hardware?

    Thanks for you help.

    Hello Lisa,

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Properties dialog box > Audio tab > Sound Playback section > what's there is your sound device. Look thru the settings in the advanced option, including Restore defaults. If you don't see anything there that helps, try uninstalling the device that came up in the Sound Playback section in Device Manager and reboot.

Device Manager access: Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > expand Sound, Video, Game Contollers. Right click on the sound device and uninstall and reboot.

    Regards - Charles

    nO Audio Device

    Thanks Charles-
this is what comes up as audio device: Modem #0 line playback.

Device manager lists something that wasn't there before:
"Other" and "Multimedia Audio Controller" , both with a yellow question mark. I have tried to uninstall several times, rebooting my pc. But I can't get rid of it. Could that be interfering with the sound hardware that came on my pc?
How to I uninstall? It looks like it's uninstalled, but when I reboot, it's trying to install itself again, looking for hardware etc.
    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

For clarity, when I wrote this: try uninstalling the device that came up in the Sound Playback section in Device Manager and reboot, I didn't add that rebooting should allow XP to re-detect the device, thinking that would fix any potential driver corruption.

This certainly could be a case of needing updated drivers. I think we need your system's info, download and install Everest Home Edition http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?lang=en and post the multi media info here and anything else that you think would be pertinent.

Note to one of the Mods: I think this should be in the Hardware section, anyway look at it.

    Regards - Charles

    Everest site is working now.

    Just to explain.
The Multimedia Audio Controller and quite likely the "Other" will be parts of the audio system. Windows cannot locate the drivers for them automatically. The audio drivers have probably been changed by the WiFi drivers.

You will need to find the driver program for your audio/soundcard and install it so that Windows can load the drivers.

There are two types of audio/soundcard. One is an add-in PCI card, the other is "built-in ", a set of chips attached to the motherboard. You may have the original drivers disk. An add-in card will have it's own drivers CD that came with the card. Built-in audio will have it's drivers on the motherboard/chipset CD that came with the computer. If you have the CD, you can run the drivers program and install the drivers from that.

If you do not have the original CD then follow Charlesvar's advice of getting Everest so that you can identify the soundcard or the motherboard with an aim to finding the drivers on the internet. The drivers from the internet will most likely be updated from the originals.

    Matt
